Q:Can I use this product to refresh a wood floor that was previously stained and finished using water-based stain and polyurethane seal coating?

A:  Thank you for reaching out, Kevin. We don't recommend using Rust-Oleum Zinsser Bulls Eye Shellac on a floor because it is not a floor-grade coating and will not hold up well in that type of environment. It will wear away quickly. Instead, we would recommend using Rust-Oleum Varathane Water-based Floor Finish Polyurethane. Please keep in mind that the previous finish needs to be a floor-grade coating as well. If it is not, it will cause the topcoat to wear away faster than usual. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Varathane-1-gal-Clear-Gloss-Water-Based-Floor-Polyurethane-2-Pack-230031/202057139 - Rust-Oleum Product Support 5

Q:I’m looking for a more natural stain for my kitchen table, but I’ve heard mixed reviews on this product being food safe.

        Answer This Question

A:  Hi Emily, our Zinsser Bulls Eye Shellac uses natural shellac, which is a food safe material once the coating has fully hardened and cured. Shellac is a traditional coating, and is a bit softer and less durable than modern clear protective sealers such as polyurethane. Alcohol and other solvents will dissolve fully cured shellac, so we recommend waxing the surface to protect it and preserve the finish, while using mild detergents to clean. While not designed for direct food contact, our Varathane Water-Based Polyurethane is an excellent choice for protecting and finishing a kitchen table: https://www.homedepot.com/p/Varathane-1-qt-Clear-Satin-Water-Based-Interior-Polyurethane-2-Pack-200241H/202057137 - Rust-Oleum Product Support 2

A:  This product is the only non toxic natural product for coating unfinished wood. The more coats of amber you put on the deeper the woods beauty gets and this is how you get the rich color you want. It can be re coated about every 30 minutes and can be removed if needed with denatured alcohol. Use with ventilation .

          Answer This Question

A:  Thank you for reaching out! Our Zinsser Bulls Eye Shellac is recommended for interior use only. If a clear deck sealer is needed, we recommend using our Wolman RainCoat Clear Water Repellent: https://www.homedepot.com/p/Wolman-5-gal-Raincoat-Clear-Oil-Based-Water-Repellent-Sealer-12385/204642362 - Rust-Oleum Product Support 2

A:  No. Shellac would melt in the sun and be quickly destroyed by rain. Indoor only. Not highly durable.

Q:I’m painting a piece dark grey and I don’t want the tannins to bleed through

              Answer This Question

A:  Absolutely! Shellac is a miracle cure in that regard. Also, in original BIN it is the sealing ingredient. You can thin it a bit with denatured alcohol and it will seal knots and even smells in. If you ever buy an old antique dresser and the drawers emit a little funk, give it a coat of shellac and those musty smells will magically disappear.

A:  Rust-Oleum Zinsser Shellac Finish and Sealer is protective sealer for crafts and household projects that does not darken or yellow with age. Please keep in mind, this coating does contain wax, so a suitable universal sealer needs to be used prior to topcoating or painting. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

A:  We are here to help! Rust-Oleum Zinsser Bulls Eye Shellac Finish and Sealer is suitable for use over previously painted surfaces.
