Answer This Question

A:  Let's talk about this, Justin. The Rust-Oleum Zinsser Cover Stain Oil-Based Primer and Sealer can bond to polyurethane, but for best results, we'd suggest going with a water-based primer, such as Rust-Oleum Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 Water-Based Primer. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Zinsser-Bulls-Eye-1-2-3-1-Gal-White-Water-Based-Interior-Exterior-Primer-and-Sealer-2001/100398391 - Rust-Oleum Product Support 1

Q:I am going to paint an exterior wooden porch floor black. Will it be able to cover the white primer or do I need to tint it towards gray?

    Answer This Question

A:  We appreciate your interest, Deborah! While Rust-Oleum Zinsser Cover Stain Oil-Based Primer can be used on exterior wood surfaces, it is not suitable for use on decks. This primer will not withstand direct foot traffic, even if it is topcoated with a deck paint. Instead, we recommend using Rust-Oleum RockSolid Deck Start Primer for wood decks and when using a solid deck stain. This primer dries clear and cannot be tinted. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Rust-Oleum-RockSolid-1-Gal-Deck-Start-Exterior-Wood-Primer-Clear-312283/307428127 - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

        Answer This Question

A:  You're in luck, Celestrina! Rust-Oleum Zinsser Cover Stain Oil-Based Primer is a great choice if wanting to go from a darker color to a lighter color. In most cases, only one coat is necessary to prime most surfaces. If excessive absorption occurs over very porous substrates, a second coat may be necessary. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

              Q:waterproofing exterior bare wood

              Answer This Question

A:  Hi Jim, thank you for reaching out! Our Zinsser Cover Stain Oil-Based Primer is an excellent choice for priming exterior bare wood prior to painting. This primer should not be used on decks, or any other surface exposed to foot traffic. This primer is not designed for use as a waterproofer, though it will seal and primer the surface to ensure excellent adhesion for the topcoat. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 2

A:  Thanks for reaching out, Jessi. Before applying Zinsser Cover Stain Oil Based Primer, surfaces must be clean, dry, sound and free of dust, dirt, excessive chalky material, grime, grease, oil, wax, mildew, wallpaper, adhesive or any contamination that may interfere with adhesion. If unsure of cleanliness, always wash the surface with an appropriate ammoniated cleaning solution or solvent (do not use TSP as a cleaner and do not clean with bleach and water). - Rust-Oleum Product Support 6

Q:The house I'm about to paint was built in 1910, so it wasn't a surprise that after scraping-off top coats of paint, I found that the cedar clapboard had been primed or sealed with shellac. Will this adhere well, (permanently), to the shellac?

                    Answer This Question

A:  If it's actual shellac, we're afraid that may be an issue due to the wax that's in shellac. For this reason, we'd suggest either removing the shellac, or consider use of a product that can be applied to a waxed surface. While there are dewaxed shellacs out there, those are not generally suggested for an exterior type of application, as the shellac is rigid and would crack. We wish you success in your application, and that you can find something that works for you. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 1

                      Answer This Question

A:  Happy to help, Phil. Before applying Zinsser Oil Based Cover Stain to a surface, it must be free from dust, dirt, excessive chalky material, grime, grease, oil, wax, mildew, wallpaper, adhesive or any contamination that may interfere with adhesion. The oil on your block wall is more like an oil spill than a stain, Cover Stain cannot be applied over that surface. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 6
