Q:Can you tell me do these fit DOWN over the post or sit on top?

Answer This Question

A:  They fit down over the post. There's a groove in the bottom where your post will slide into.

A:  They set down over the post a bit. Secure with silicone or caulk on top of post.

by|Aug 7, 2023

A:  They slide onto post a bit. You might want to use wood glue on trim joints before installing. I had a couple of the bottom pieces come loose after about a year even though they were painted.

Q:I am staining my caps a dark mahogany on a white post to match my mahogany decking. I don't want to glue the caps, so it will be easy to solid stain the white post in the future and not sure if screwing them in will allow for easy removal and/or cause the cap to not look good aesthetically with screw holes. Looking for advice?

Answer This Question

A:  We recommend screwing the post in and using an industrial adhesive. You could try using a clear caulk for easy removal.

by|Jun 20, 2019

A:  Why not use a small amount of construction adhesive or caulk to fix the caps after you stain them. You could then just pop them off when you want to stain the posts.

    Answer This Question

A:  Yes. The cap is a bit larger and there will be some space but it isn't noticeable.

    by|Nov 14, 2018

A:  Post cap fits nominal 4 in. x 4 in. wood post (actual post dimensions 3-1/2 in. x 3-1/2 in.)

A:  Yes it will fit a 3 5/8 inch post. I glue them on with Elmer's Professional Glue to keep them in place.

A:  The measured inside dimensions for this cap are 3-5/8 x 3-5/8, so the question is more about the dimensions of the posts than the cap. My existing pressure-treated posts were closer to 3-1/2, so I had extra room inside.

            by|Nov 14, 2018

              A:  Yes it will fit.

Q:Should we prime the inside of the cap to seal it as well as the top if painting?

A:  It probably wouldn't hurt, but I would put two coats on the top, and be sure that the nail holes are covered to prevent the entrance of water.

A:  Yes, that will preserve the caps even more

                        by|Oct 30, 2018

A:  I have never sealed any caps before, Elmer's Professional Glue will seal them. You could run a little row of silicone caulk around the inside edge and that will work.

A:  Yes, we recommend sealing the whole post cap. Before priming and painting the post cap, please allow the wood to dry out completely. To test if the post cap is ready to be painted, drip a few drops of water onto the wood. If the water beads up on the surface of the wood, the moisture content is still too high for the wood to accept a sealant. If the water droplets wick into the post cap, it is ready to accept a sealant. If the water beads up on the post cap, give the wood some more time to dry out, and you should eventually be able to test it again until the water wicks into the wood.

A:  I would, it will help protect just in case there is any empty space left between the post and the cap.

A:  Can’t hurt. Mine have shrunk as time has gone on. Maybe sealing them would have helped and stopped them from cracking.

A:  About 1/2". That's an estimate as I have already installed the cap and can't measure it.

A:  Maybe an inch. (Can't remember as I installed the 6 that I received - still wanting for 2 more that were left off my order, for some unknown reason.)
