A: The caps fit a nominal 4 x 4 post nicely, so probably a bit under 4" square inside.

A: It is 3 5/8 so it fits on a 4 x 4 post (which is actually 3.5 x 3.5 of course) with just a slight gap . They have to be glued down.

A: Measure the newel. I think the cap would be too big for most newels I’ve seen. The caps have just a little extra space on a four by four. Your newel would have to be that size, 3.5 in.

A: I drilled small pilot holes to prevent cracking then screwed them in with 2 in coated screws, but I added a round post cap to the top (with a pilot hole) which hid the screws.

Q:In re: to my earlier question about my 3X3 posts, of course they are really 2 1/2 X 2 1/2. I did see a few caps that are plastic or metal in that size but would like wood ones. My elevated garden bed is made of cedar.

A: Hello Cydney, We sure do remember your question from yesterday. Thank you for remeasuring. One option that we found is Internet #100036592, Model #58670, Store SKU #21588, the Hampton 4 in. x 4 in. Pressure-Treated Wood Pyramid Post. The inside dimensions for this cap are 3-5/8 x 3-5/8, so you'd have some play between the cap and your raised bed posts. What our expert recommended is gluing some 1-1/2 in. x 1-1/2 in. shims/spacers into the spaces remaining between the posts and the caps. These should not be visible and should give you the finished look you are wanting. Another post with similar inside dimensions is Internet #100095712, Model #58672, Store SKU #323760, the Newbury 4 in. x 4 in. Pyramid Wood Post Cap. It might be a good idea to purchase just a single cap to see if you like the look. Beyond that, if none of these options sit well with you, you could always contact an associate at Home Depot to see about a special order from the manufacturer in a slightly smaller size. One last idea: wood fence post finials. Here is just one of the many out there - Internet #205112922, Model #189296, 4 in. x 4 in. Gothic Wood Post Cap Finial (6-Pack) . The actual size on this particular finial is 2.75 in. x 2.75 in. x 6.75 in. We'd love you to submit a photo of what you ended-up with.

Q:Why can't I find these for a 3X3? I purchased an elevated garden bed and it came without them. It looks unfinished.

A: Hi Cydney, This confusing thing with wood is that there are actual and nominal measurements. Actual dimensions are smaller than what is generally stated - or, the nominal. If your garden bed says that its corner posts are 3 x 3, you might want to measure to confirm that the 3 x 3 is really that. Then, you will have to find a post cap that is slightly bigger. For example, a post cap's dimensions might be shown as measuring 3-5/8 in. x 3-5/8 in. (inside), and this cap could be placed on posts measuring 3-1/2" x 3-1/2". Feel free to write to us again after you confirm the dimensions, or ask a PRO associate at Home Depot for help in locating a cap that works best with your garden area and the raised bed style.
