Q:What is the best oil to use on red cedar, I have acquired some very old cedar that was milled from local trees and they have setup under a building for years. Some of which still appear to very new based on the grain and the color of the wood. I have been back and forth on using a type of oil on the cedar vs a polyurethane for high shinny gloss. Or can you apply both? I do know some oils when they dry they can leave a small to heavy clear coat, with that being said what would be my best option for restoring the wood and giving it a shine. I have been told Cedar Oil, Teak Oil, Tung Oil or any other suggestions

A:  Happy to help, Gerrad! Rust-Oleum Watco Danish Oil is a unique blend of penetrating oil & varnish, which hardens in the wood, not on the wood. This product can be topcoated with a polyurethane if desired. Please keep in mind, this product is intended for use on interior surfaces. The best product will be dependent on what the cedar will be used for and the type of final look you want. A:  If you want a gloss finish with ease of applying oil, use Waterlox Gloss Original Finish. I just finished a piece using this, and it is everything you want.

A:  Thank you for reaching out! Our Watco Lacquer and Polyurethane are designed for use over previously stained wood surfaces. The other Watco products such as our Danish Oil should only be applied over bare wood surfaces. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 2

A:  Happy to help, Kim! Since Rust-Oleum Watco Danish Oil is not a food-grade coating we do not recommend it for use on cutting boards. Instead, we recommend Rust-Oleum Watco Butcher Block Oil for cutting boards. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Watco-1-pt-Clear-Butcher-Block-Oil-4-Pack-241758/205113777 - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

                      Answer This Question

A:  Glad to help out, Bee. Rust-Oleum Watco Danish Oil can certainly be used to finish the top of a dining room table. Keep in mind that Rust-Oleum coatings are not intended for applications to surfaces in direct contact with food or beverages. Our recommendation is to leave items in a well ventilated area for one week after painting. This allows for the most complete curing as well as maximum coating hardness. As with any coating product, care should be taken to ensure that accidental ingestion does not occur. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 5

Q:What are the differences between models #65732 and #65731? I only see cure time on #65731 is three times as much as #65732. Also there is no VOC marking on #65731 - what is it? Are they going to leave identical finish on surface?

A:  We are here to help! Both products will offer the same finish. The two different numbers are for different VOC levels, which can affect the product availability depending on where you live. Otherwise, both listings for Rust-Oleum Watco Danish Oil will offer similar results and finish. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

A:  Glad to lend a hand, Kim. We do not recommend mixing Rust-Oleum Watco Danish Oil with any other products. It may affect the curing and/or performance of the products. You can however apply the beeswax treatment once the product has fully dired for at least 72 hours. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 5

A:  It would depend on how the previous finish was applied. It would most likely be ok over an oil stain, but not if another finish were applied over the stain. Also, I doubt this Danish Oil would make a significant change to the dark walnut color, and the end result would be unpredictable.

A:  You've come to the right place, Jo. Rust-Oleum Watco Danish Oil can only be applied over bare wood because the oil needs to be able to penetrate into the wood to create a natural, warm glow. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 5
