Q:Can you oil-poly over this danish oil once it drys ?

    Answer This Question

A:  Happy to help. Watco Danish Oil can be top coated with a polyurethane once the Danish Oil has completely dried for at least 5 days, the surface must be dry. Apply one coat of Danish Oil liberally with a brush or clean lint free rag. Allow to penetrate for 15 minutes, then remove excess by wiping with a rag in the direction of the grain. If additional coats are needed, reapply allowing an additional 15 minutes penetration. Wipe surface completely dry, removal of all excess material is essential to ensure proper dry time and proper adhesion of topcoat. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 6

Q:This was applied to the corner of a door which had some dry rot and the wood absorbed a LOT of oil like a sponge. How long will it take to dry and stop smelling?

              Answer This Question

A:  To help ensure the fastest cure and dry times of Rust-Oleum Watco Natural Danish Oil, we recommend allowing it to dry in an area with proper ventilation. Please keep in mind, heavier applications, cooler temperatures, or higher humidity will extend the dry times. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

A:  No doubt the dry rotted area absorbed a lot of the liquid. The solvents in the product are what you are smelling. It will probably take a while until the solvents evaporate completely so there is no or little remaining odor. A wild guess is that it will take 1 to 2 weeks depending upon variables such as moisture content of the air, temperature and air flow.
