A:  The ones I received were not veneer but they were 3 boards glued together then turned. One leg had a slight gap in the joined boards that I had to fill.

A:  Yes, they are glued up from several pieces of wood. I suspect that this may make them less expensive and maybe even stronger. I've painted mine, giving them an antique/distressed look and they look great. I used an apron in mounting them, so can't answer the second part of the question..
