Questions and Answers for VISION GRILLS Dual-Purpose Lava Cooking Stone/Heat Deflector

A:  If you have the 18inch cooking surface, then the 14 inch works.

A:  you want the larger size unless you have the cadet.

A:  Use a smaller stone like I use a smaller Kettle Lid pushed to the back that I cooked slow roast over Lid . Terry

A:  It is typically best to add in the wood along with the charcoal when you are getting it started. Typical practice has you not put the lava stone in or even the dome closed until you first get your coals lit and spread around. Once you see your first orange glow in the coals, you can go ahead and add them in, put in your lava stone and cooking grate, then close the dome and start using the dials to close in on your target temperature.

A:  If you are using this stone in a Vision grill/smoker then the only way to add wood chunks is to remove the stone.

A:  Well i don't add any once i'm up and running. i like to layer wood chunks then charcoal wood chunks and more charcoal so as the fire burns you get smoke at different times. please look online there are a few video's that show this.

A:  I can’t answer your question as I’ve never smoked anything past 6 hours or so. What I do is I soak the wood chunks (large ones) in water for a few hours before lighting them and parts of some still remain.

A:  No, this will not fit a Pitt Boss K22.

A:  Not sure, but likely would fit any round 22 “ grill.

A:  Two ways to clean. #1 scrape off with putty knife and turn over so the next time you grill the residue will burn off. Happy Grilling

A:  Flip the lava stone after every other use so that the fire burns the fat and creosote off, on the side facing down.

A:  I cover mine with foil for low and slow cooking to keep the grease out of the pores of the stone. A hi-temp bake will cook the grease off.

A:  I use a grill brush

A:  What I do when I have a lot of grease on one side, next time or after I'm through cooking I turn that side to the coals and let it burn the residue a little. Then when it's cool I use a stainless wire brush to clean the face of it. One thing I have found is you can get a cheap throw away aluminum pan and form it to fit below grate on top of that stone. It does not affect how your meat will cook but catches a lot of the grease that drips off to save having to clean the stone so much.

A:  Just turn it over and let the heat source do the cleaning for you!

A:  It is recommended to flip the Lava Stone after every use which allows the grill to burn off any drippings from the previous cook.

A:  Flip it over and the heat takes care of it.

A:  I would just scrap off the stone will a grill scraper and turn the stone over so the dirty side faced the fire.

A:  I juat scraape it off with a metal spatchila or puddy knife. I do not wash it.

A:  After mine broke I ordered a replacement. However before it arrived, I fitted 3 circular clamps together around the broken stone as a temporary fix. Four months later they continue holding it together and the replacement is still in the package as shipped. This may be the answer to a product that seems destined to fail. Maybe the stones should be sold with three circular clamps included.

A:  Where did you get that information? It is incorrect, unless you drop it. Ours has lasted for 4 years thus far. I suppose some could break earlier, but our experience, with heavy usage, has been great! I really don't know of a suitable replacement. Vision does stand behind its product.

A:  I've had the Vision Grilles Lava Stone for over a year now and have not had any breakage. I have used it in low and high temp cooking as well as winter grilling where it goes from freezing temp to high temp in a short period (I live in Maine). A good alternate setup would be a 14" cast iron skillet with the handle cut off. I use this for long smokes with fatty meats like pork shoulder. It works as a heat deflector as well as a drip pan. Simply place the skillet in the Vision Grilles Lava Stone bracket.

A:  I don't know the answer to your question. I have found, so far, that mine is doing okay. I treat it with respect, you might say and handle it carefully. I'm sure in time it will crack but I have read that some people just put a large metal band around the outside and can still use it with no problem.(like a large hose clamp) I do heat mine with the grill so there is no temp shock and that might be helping too. A:  I have had mine for 1 year. I have cooked on it 6 times. It’s still strong. No cracks.

A:  Mine only lasted about 8 uses before breaking in half. I treated it very gently, never dropped it or exposed it to temperature shock. I contacted the company and apparently they only stand behind their product 90 days and you must have the receipt from the purchase. I also asked for an alternative product but did not get that answer. I would like to know if anyone has tried a deflector made for another grill that would fit.

A:  Mine average about 12 months before breaking. I'm on the 3rd one (which is broken and I'm holding together with tinfoil for smoking). I don't drop them and treat them carefully knowing that they will break. I'm going to try the DIY recommended by Raymond in this thread as spending 50 bucks on one of these every year is a bit much. I only use mine for low temp, slow cooks but have had no luck with longevity of the stone. It always cracks in two.

A:  Yes, you can use this with a compatible sized grill, either electric or gas or charcoal fueled.

A:  I think it should work for you just fine on an electric BBQ. Just make sure the metal brackets don't touch your heating elements.

A:  Yes if you are putting the lava stone between your meat and the heat source.

A:  If you can get the temperature to 300-350F it should work.

A:  Mine is for the B-Series Vision Grille. The bracket is 18-1/2" tip to tip with a 1-1/4" bent lip to fit on the Vision Grille's fire bowl. The stone is 14" in diameter.

A:  12 to 14 inches . It is designed to fit right in the grill

A:  the bracket has a outside dim. of 20 inches and inside dim. of 16 inches. the stone itself is 14 inches x 1 inch thick.

A:  Bracket fits the "B" series Vision grills. The stone is 14" in diameter.

A:  I bought mine a while back. It was out of stock for a while when I was looking for one in stores and online. Once it was available and in stock online, I ordered one through the Home Depot website. It only took a couple of days to receive it.

A:  I found that my store was carrying twenty of them even though they weren't displayed. They showed in stock on the app and found an employee who agreed to find them.

A:  It came 5 days after I ordered it on line. I was happy with the delivery time.

A:  I was able to find this in the store, but generally speaking, shipping is fast on in-stock products.

A:  Are you really asking users this question? It took me 5 minutes. I walked into the store, got it off the shelf, the walked up to the checkout and paid. 5 minutes.

A:  Yes if you have a crimping tool but the stone is close to the diameter of my grill so the stone may be to big

A:  There is about 1/2 inch gap all around the stone for the heat to pass around. The bracket is stainless steel I'm not sure how much you can reduce the gap without adversely affecting the performance of your grill. Most kamado grills have air holes in the chamber for heat transfer that would make up for the loss.
