I have applied this product around my house and in front of my deck, We sit out on our deck a lot during the spring and summer months. I does have a little bit of an oder upon initial application. I have found wetting it down accelerates the process. I definitely do not find a problem the next spring. I have applied it in the back yard. I surrounded my trees with regular mulch and applied the perimeter with rubberized mulch. You need in all cases to drop a weed guard before applying rubberized mulch. Seams to work for me. I have used about 75 bags so far to cover my desired area. About  2.inches deep. Sometimes a little more. A lot less than 3 inches needed for regular mulch.
