A:  Full swing door. Stops on barrel when opening.

        by|Apr 27, 2020

A:  The best way to find the size of the opening stand the barrel upright, place your door frame on top, drill and installed two screws to hold the door frame in place, mark the inside of the frame, make sure you plumb and center the door frame on the barrel top, that will give you the size of the opening, I cut mine out with a grinder and a metal cutting disk from Home Depot, it takes less than 15 minutes.

A:  I’m not entirely sure, but I do remember that when I first got it my thought was, “This is hefty and well made.” It’s got 3 cast iron pieces, at least. My best estimation would be 35 - 40 lbs. Sorry that I cannot be more precise.

A:  Yes, it can be used in a cabin.

A:  First off, you’ll have to check local fire codes and recommendations. Different states have different laws. Also, if any insurance is involved with your cabin, it’s important to have the installation approved and certified. Baring those issues in mind, yes, I installed mine indoors. I thought it best to line a 55 gallon drum with a mixture of perlite and cement. You can probably pick up a large bag of perlite (volcanic rock) inexpensive from your Home Depot (or online). As long as you feed some air into your stove from an attached, outside air vent, I find the barrel stove is great for heating 1,000 to 1,200 square feet - comfortably. It’s important to get a good fit with some wood stove gasket rope around your stove door. Some people even install an additional air vent underneath the stove door- it takes a little trial and error to get all of the airflow issues just right. But, once you do, I think these stoves work and look great!

A:  Can be used in a cabin, we have been heating our cabin with one for over 50 years (not the same one, barrel burns out) but check your insurance company, most will not insure building with this type of heater inside. May need to find a smaller "mutual" type insurance company in your area.

A:  Absolutely. Use you head around combustibles. I have two and would get another in a heart beat. Don’t know about the about the caulking and alarm stuff , do know that they heat. Lite a fire in it outside to burn off any paint or junk in or on your barrel. Good luck!

A:  Yes. I would recommend an insulated mat be used under it. Perhaps a piece of wallboard would work.

A:  There are many variables, like the quality of the barrel and the type exhaust pipe/chimney you are using. Also the size of cabin but cabin heating is what this unit was designed for so the easy answer is yes.

A:  if to put the barrel so the bungs are at the 3 and 9 o'clock positions, there is no problem. That having been said, the kit is pretty worthless. you will get gaps as air leaks all around the door unless you caulk. And the parts are rough cast and not machined or finished. Mine works, but only because I significantly modified it. Overall, I'd say 'Don't Waste Your Money On This.'
