Q:The 80" door is unavailable, can I cut 4" off the bottom of the 84" door and have it look symmetrical with the top? How wide is the bottom & top piece?

A: If you tape the edge and can cut straight, yes.

A: You can not cut that much off of door without hurting the structure integrity of door. Please visit your local Home Depot and they can find a vendor who can customize this door for you. You can get away with a 1/4" on each side of door, before you start cutting into the engineered wood.

Q:Can i cut 2” off the width of this door

Answer This Question
A: Probably. It is a “solid core” door, so not hollow ...
Taking 1” off each side shouldn’t affect the door itself.
Will you be mounting it as a hinged door? If so, you would need to consider whether enough hinge and door knob wood remains (~4” - 1”= 3”) depending on style of both.
I hung my door “barn” style, so roller brackets at top

A: Looking at mine, I would say "Yes", if you cut 1" off each side. It looks like you would be fine doing that because the side pieces go all the way from top to bottom.
I love these doors! They have been a highlight of our remodel.

A: Trimming allowance is as follows: height - 1/2-in max (1/4-in top and 1/4-in bottom). We do not allow for trimming for width. Trimming beyond allowance voids warranty. Please visit your local Home Depot and they can special order door for you.

A: Yes, but you would need to cut an inch off each side for it to look symmetrical.

Q:Can this door be planed down 1/2 inch to fit a smaller opening

Answer This Question
A: Width or height? Personally, I think it would take away from the overall aesthetics of the door. I believe these can be special ordered to fit if needed but will cost more. If you’re trying to cut costs and not too worried about the aesthetics’s of the outward band around the door, it may be possible to plane it down to the desired fit. These doors are beautiful and worth the money.

With the above in mind, this is a barn door, not a door that needs handles, you could trim it down to your opening without hurting the integrity strength of door, but warranty still will be voided.

Q:Two-part question: 1. could you put hinges and a knob/latch on this slab to fit inside a regular standard door opening instead of putting on a sliding mechanism, and 2. How much can this be trimmed down - could you take as much as 6 inches off the height?

A: Yes you can put hinges and a knob/latch on the slab. I would not cut six inches from the top off the height. You could destroy the door. Good luck with your project.

Answer This Question
A: No,no frame. I'm using it as a barn door.
by|Sep 3, 2020
A: No it does not.

A: This is a sliding barn door. Barn doors do not have frames. The opening over which the door is placed can gave a frame, but it will have to thin to insure the sliding barn door will operate correctly.
I do not recommend installing any frame around the opening.

A: No. It’s just the door. It’s not a door I would hang in a frame, personally. Makes a great sliding barn door.
