A:  Nu White replaced Shell White roughly 15 years ago. This product is made of galvanized steel with a powder coated white finish. I would describe it as somewhat of a mat finish. It is not glossy. The factory finish is designed to receive paint for those that want a different color or finish. Thus I would describe it as white but not a shiny refrigerator white.

A:  No, you must remove the existing cover and install over the heating coil.

              by|May 1, 2019

A:  The simple answer is no. Further the purpose of enclousure only is not to replace existing cover, although many people use if for this off label use quite a bit. Typically it is used as a pipe chase. Say you have a 10' wall where you need 5' of element. You may run 5' of complete and 5' of enclosure, so that the baseboard runs all accrost he wall.

                by|Apr 30, 2019

A:  It does not go over an existing cover. It is a complete replacement enclosure unit. You would remove the existing backplate and install the new one which slips behind the existing pipe/heating fans. Once you've done that. The new cover slips on easily. You will have to buy the end caps separately to finish the run on either end. If you are joining several units together along the wall, you will also need to buy the parts that cover the joints so the seams don't show. The additional parts are inexpensive.

                    Answer This Question

A:  If you look under "Info and Guides" on the Home Depot product listing page you will see the specification sheet that gives a illustration of all the dimensions. The out side dimension of the height is 7 1/8" however baseboard is often mounted 1/2" to 1" off the floor to allow for the installation of carpet.

A:  You have to buy the whole enclosure. Be sure it's the one that doesn't have the heating element included. Also, inspect it well before starting to install. I have had a number of these arrive scratched and dinged.

A:  I think you would need to refer to the paint maker for that answer, I certain that it could be painted but priming/ etching would likely be necessary for ideal adhesion. Most shrouds aren't touched much or subjected to weather So one could probably get by without perfect prep. .

A:  Slant Fin 30 baseboard is manufactured with powder coated galvanized steel. I have pained it with spray paint in the past to mach older colors; with great results. I can't speak to Sherwin Williams paint as I no little to nothing about paint as I am a Plumber. I would suggest you show the person at the paint store what you are painting and I would think they would know what the best paint would be for that application.

                                A:  Yes

                                by|May 5, 2023

A:  Enclosure only will be the exact same product as complete, except it will not have the element or the expansion cradles which are attached to the element. The brackets the element rests on will be there. The purpose of enclosure only is to act as a pipe chase on new installations or to give visual continuity. For example if a room calls for 16' of element and has a 20' wall the installer may install 16' of complete and 4 feet of enclosure only so the enclosure runs wall to wall and does not stop 4' from the wall. My point is that the entente of enclosure only is not to replace old enclosure. Customers frequently purchase enclosure and attempt to do this. Sometimes the old element will fit in the new enclosure and sometimes it does not. And some times this can be done very easily and sometimes the way the originally enclosure was installed makes it impossible to do this without destroying the element. Its always a good idea to assess the chances of this working by careful measurement and assessment of the current installed product before attempting.

The 4 footer states "Enclosure only"... would it be too hard to state this for the 5 footer as well?! Other than that, great product, as a GC, I've installed a half dozen of these with no problem at all.

A:  The safe answer for me is to say yes you need to remove the element to change the enclosure. But the truth is I have seen people that were able to do it without. It all depends on how the product was originally installed. The purpose of enclosure only is to act as a pipe chase in new installations not to rewrap existing elements. However this off label use is done frequently with varying degrees of success. I would probably just change the element and enclosure. I would do it during the summer when getting it back on line is no so time sensitive. However I am familiar with draining my system, filling it and purging it, where most are not. Changing the enclosure without damaging the fins or cutting you hands is not easy. Damaged fins don considerably effect the heat output but they can increase the noise that is created during heat up.
