Q:Any ideas on keeping rabbits from eating the leaves? I've tried moth balls and peppermint oil and seven dust. I've resorted to chicken wire cages, but this is unsightly in my shrub bed. I had really nice 3 gallon plants that have been eaten considerably

Answer This Question

A:  I am unfamiliar with rabbits and their eating practices. Seems like you can choose between keeping your plants and making it look more "sightly".

by|Jun 20, 2023

A:  Protecting your Soft Caress Mahonia from rabbits can be challenging, but there are several methods you can try. Since you've already experimented with various deterrents, another option is to use a rabbit repellent spray specifically designed for plants. These repellents often contain a combination of natural ingredients that rabbits find unappealing. Applying the spray according to the product instructions may help deter rabbits from nibbling on the leaves. Additionally, consider creating a physical barrier around the shrub using lightweight and inconspicuous materials like floating row covers. These covers allow sunlight and water to reach the plant while acting as a barrier against rabbits. Regularly monitoring your garden and promptly removing any rabbit-attracting debris can also help in managing the issue.

Q:Does the dwarf have the berries birds love!

      Answer This Question

A:  Yes, the Soft Caress Mahonia produces clusters of small, grape-like berries that birds are known to enjoy. These berries are typically bluish-black in color and add ornamental interest to the shrub. Birds, such as robins and cedar waxwings, are attracted to the berries, making the Soft Caress Mahonia a potentially valuable addition to a garden for those interested in supporting local bird populations. The berries usually develop in late summer and persist into fall, providing a food source for birds during that time. However, it's essential to note that while the berries are generally not toxic, it's advisable to ensure that any plant material consumed by wildlife is safe for them.

A:  Al6 plants appear to be disease-resistant. However, we have only had the plants about two months. Stunning, healthy so far! Good luck.

          by|Jun 11, 2022

A:  The Soft Caress Mahonia is known for its relatively good resistance to diseases. This blooming evergreen shrub is generally hardy and less prone to common garden pests and diseases. However, as with any plant, it is not completely immune, and factors such as environmental conditions, soil health, and proper care can influence its overall disease resistance. Providing well-drained soil, adequate air circulation, and avoiding overwatering can contribute to the plant's health and resilience. While Soft Caress Mahonia is considered to be a disease-resistant shrub, routine observation and maintenance practices are always recommended to ensure the best performance and longevity of the plant.

A:  I planted mine outside (Austin, TX zone 8). I expect it to hold up through our mild winters and the 5 or so freezes we get each year. Everything I read about these is that they do well outside.

A:  It can be planted in either.

A:  The Soft Caress Mahonia can be planted both in the ground and in containers, offering flexibility in landscaping options. If you choose to plant it in the ground, ensure well-drained soil and provide adequate space for its mature size. In planters or containers, use a high-quality, well-draining potting mix, and make sure the container has drainage holes. Container planting allows for mobility and is especially useful in areas with limited garden space or for those who want to showcase the Soft Caress Mahonia on patios or balconies. Regardless of the planting method, it's essential to consider the specific needs of the Soft Caress Mahonia, including sunlight requirements and proper watering, to promote healthy growth and development.

A:  The early winter blooms of the Soft Caress Mahonia typically last for several weeks, typically from late fall to early winter. In Zone 8, such as in Charlotte, NC, where winters are relatively mild, you can expect the Soft Caress Mahonia to begin flowering in late fall, around November or December, and the blooms may persist through the early months of winter, potentially lasting until February. The exact duration of the bloom period can be influenced by specific weather conditions and local climate variations. Enjoy the delicate, fragrant blossoms during their winter display, which adds a touch of color and interest to the garden during the cooler months.

A:  Yes, the Soft Caress Mahonia is amenable to pruning and shaping, making it suitable for creating a hedge-like appearance. Regular pruning can help maintain a more compact and neat form, and you can shape it to cover or screen areas, such as AC units, effectively. When pruning, it's advisable to do so after the plant has finished flowering, typically in late winter or early spring. This allows for the removal of any winter damage and encourages new growth for the upcoming season. Just be mindful not to prune too drastically, as Mahonias tend to bloom on previous year's growth. With proper care and shaping, the Soft Caress Mahonia can serve as an attractive and functional hedge in your landscape.

A:  This plant will only get to be 3ft tall at maturity, so I am not sure it will get tall enough to hide your ac unit, and this plant does not hold a trimmed shape very well.

A:  The Soft Caress Mahonia is well-suited for USDA hardiness zones 7 to 9. It thrives in mild to moderate climates and can tolerate a range of conditions within this zone range. In colder climates (Zone 6 and below), winter protection will be necessary, as extremely low temperatures can potentially damage the plant. Conversely, in hotter climates, providing some afternoon shade can be beneficial. It's essential to consider the specific climate conditions in your region and provide the necessary care to ensure the optimal growth and health of the Soft Caress Mahonia.
