A: The instructions indicate that the plastic cover shall be in place when not servicing the unit. I can only imagine that is to protect from any issues with the pilot lighting mechanism. The short answer is it will function. I had mine off for a week, because I forget to put in back on. But there must be some reason that they require it. In your instructions, there is a RHEEM help line. Have your serial number ready and call them and ask.

Q:Why does it require 120 volts?

A: For the electronic ignition/emission system. Formerly all gas water heaters had a pilot light which burned 24 hours per day whether hot water was needed or not .- using an insignificant amount of gas, but providing hot water even if the electricity went off. This new system adds components to your hot water system which could fail plus it removes the greater reliability of the gas vs electricity supply from the equation. Buy a conventional old fashioned water heater instead of this model.

Q:CAN THIS WATER HEATER BE USED FOR 4-PLEX APT

A: This water heater is designed for single family residences, and installation for multiple residences would reduce the warranty to 1 year parts and tank, no labor. We would suggest to contact our Commercial Water Heater department at 334-203-7372, open Mon-Fri 9am-6pm EST.

A: Using this for a 4-plex is really putting all your eggs in one basket. This unit depends on electricity for ignition. So if the electricity goes out there won't be any hot water either. If I had realized this I would not have bought this unit. It has no pilot light. Secondly, it is about the same cost as three (3) normally aspirated 40 gallon gas heaters with old fashioned pilot lights, which will give you much more hot water if needed. Rheem , electronic ignition plus a fan to give a cleaner exhaust does not make a better gas water heater.

A: You meant 4 units, as my experienced with apartments or construction, you cannot install one wh for the whole complex. You need to install one wh for each unit. You need to hire a licensed plumber for this multiple dwelling.

A: Unfortunately, i'm not entirely sure what is being asked. However, if you are asking what is behind the outer door cover at the bottom, the answer is simply, the burner assembly. A visual explanation can be found in the Use and Care Manual on page 30.

A: I think you mean the front shroud. Fancy led lights on a thermostat that indicates what level of heated water it will deliver and a more normal looking burner control with a blower thrown in to give cleaner exhaust.
