Q:I have a GP-201 radonaway that stopped working. I am looking to replace. Is a GP-301 or GP-501C a better choice? My current model is a 1/30 hp with 1 amp max and the GP-301 is 1/10 hp with 1.5 amp max. Any issues?

Q:Can I replace a GP401 fan with this GP301
by|Dec 25, 2022

Answer This Question

A:  Replacing the original GP401 fan with a GP301 depends on what the operating pressure was on the system U-tube. The housing is a direct fit but the op. pressure potential of the GP301 is slightly lower. Max for the 401 is is 3? op. and the 301 is 2.3".

    Answer This Question

A:  Did you remove approximately 5 gallons of dirt when you drilled hole in floor. Imagine holding you hand on vacum cleaner hose negative pressure does make a slight hum. It's also possible you bought a pump that's stronger than you needed. While I do hear a slight hum inside house it's not bad. It's also possible pipe and or pump is not mounted Securely.

A:  I really don't know the answer but I imagine if you put a rheostat on it could work but not as well. Mine stays running full blast and works great. I performed a test on the system, and Radon is almost at zero now, and the electric bill was not adversely affected.

A:  Someone installed what's called a "Solid State switch" with several speeds and it works fine now, you can also adjust speeds while trial testing at different speeds, which I feel might be able to save wear and tear on the system while quieting it down.

A:  Yes, that is the way it I designed to work. Since it relatively warm air that will exhausted, install a drain elbow. Go there web site, it will tell you how. With out it, in New England, motor life will be reduced.

A:  The installation instructions state “ mount the fan vertically with outlet up” so the answer to your question is probably “no”. My guess is the motor bearings are optimized for maximum life when mounted vertically, so while the fan may appear to work fine mounted horizontal, the motor bearing life may be reduced. This fan is rated for indoor or outdoor use, so you could mount the fan outside (on an exterior wall). You can view the installation manual on the Home Depot web site www.homedepot.com, search for gp501, scroll down to “Info & Guides” and click on”Instructions/Assembly. Good luck.

A:  Depends on your local building code. Ours had to be installed in the attic. If you are wanting to run it up the outside of the house, the fan itself needs to be installed outside in case of leaking you do not want it to leak radon into the basement.

A:  Thank you for your question about sizing a RadonAway fan unit. There are many factors that go in to sizing the proper fan model for each application. Square footage is one factor. The permiability of the sub-slab material, pipe diameter, length of the system piping and your radon test results are some of these factors choosing the right fan. It is always prudent to consult with a Radon Professional in your area to ensure that the system is installed to the current mitigation standards.

A:  There's more to the question than just radon level and sq ft. Its also dependent on the construction of that area (dirt floor, cement floor, etc.) I'd definitely consult a professional for their recommendations directly, even though it may be costly.

                              Answer This Question

A:  You should first have your home tested. I used a digital readout radon detector I purchased at Home Depot which indicated an initial reading of almost 10 times the recommended maximum of 4 picocuries per liter (pCI/L) so I purchased one of the largest motor radon fan Home Depot offered, the GP501. My Colorado house is 4,000 square feet with three stories, so for 2100 square feet you can likely get by with a smaller motor unit as mine consumes ~120 Watts or ~1050 kWhours per year * $ 0.11 per kWhour = $116 per year in electrical costs, and larger motors make more noise. That said, $116 a year is cheap compared to getting treated for lung cancer. You best bet is to buy a smaller size motor and a digital radon meter, as you can swap out to a bigger motor (several motor sizes fit the standard RadonAway chassis) if your reading are too high. Note the digital meters take about 2 weeks after installing to get an accurate reading.
