Q:How do I know when the paint is the right "thinness" for spraying?

Answer This Question

A:  It is best to use a Viscosity cup. When spraying direct from the can you may need to dilute by up to 10% if your coating is very thick e.g. exterior latex. When spraying latex from the quart cup all latex based coatings will need at least 10% dilution. Other coatings such as lacquers, urethanes generally don't but you should always check your paint viscosity with the viscosity cup before you start to add any thinning material.

A:  I mixed in water to my latex paint at about a 1:5 ratio and that seemed to do the trick well. When it's thin enough, the paint will come out of the nozzle smoothly. Trial and error unless you have a way to measure viscosity but I don't really think it necessary to measure it. If it's too thin i imagine you'll have issues keeping it on what you're spraying without running all over the surface. You want something that still looks like paint, not watery...

A:  The Powermate 010-0013CT is a very versatile spray gun. It comes with both an internal and an external spray nozzle. You can change the method of spraying between pressure feed and siphon feed by simply removing the set screw in the paint cup cover. It functions 3 ways: internal mix/pressure feed for applying latex; external mix/pressure feed for applying primer; and external mix/siphon feed for applying thinner materials such as lacquers & stains which need to be atomized to provide smooth surfaces. It is shipped with a one-quart paint cup. You will need a female connector plug to attach your air hose to the spray gun, as this spray gun has male NPT threads. If you are doing a great deal of painting you may want an in-line filter to be installed between the hose and the spray gun, which is available at Home Depot Item # 194904; and possibly a spray gun air adjusting valve which is also sold at Home Depot # 192554 to help regulate the air flow to the gun. A:  You will need a compressor and hose. I think that was all I needed to get up and going.

A:  This might seem obvious, but it doesn't come with the air hose for connecting it to a compressor. Or the compressor for that matter. Everything else, yes.

A:  You will need a compressor, plenty of hose, a fitting, and some paint and thinner, but otherwise it works right out of the box.
