A:  How many coats is not as important as the finished thickness. The coating needs to be applied at a minimum of 10 mils thick. That's 10 thousandths of an inch thick. Sort of like three sheets of paper thick. Some people do that in one coat, other do it in multiple coats. Smooth surfaces are usually very easy to single coat where the rougher the surface is, the more coats you'd need to get everything covered.
