    Answer This Question

A:  Thank you for the question. The OSI SC175 Draft and Acoustical Sound Sealant is a latex, water-based product. Unfortunately, you have not provided enough information about the intended use on fiber cement board to give you a proper answer. The sealant will not hurt the board, but it may also not be well suited for the intended application. Perhaps if you tell us more, we can better help you.

Q:What is the reason this product isn't supposed to be used with poly to create an air seal? There is been a few posts from people being successful just as it should as an acoustical sealant just like the other manufactures that recommend its use.

A:  Poly pipe is prone to vibration and as pliable the sealant is supposed to be drywall dust may harden the caulk and poly pipe may crack near the source of vibration with age.

Q:Can this be used to air seal my home. I'm looking to caulk my 2x6 framing to my OSB from the inside along with top and bottom plates, double and triple studs? I want a cost effective but reliable product that is going to seal the air from coming through extremely small cracks and stay there forever.

A:  Yes, that is the most ideal application. If you do any caulking after hanging any drywall, have a vacuum with HEPA filter handy as drywall dust repels the caulk.

A:  Personally I wouldn't because it is very messy. It doesn't really dry . That's the whole point it stays very flexible . On the other hand I don't know what alternative you have. Maybe regular caulking would be better if there isn't any movement of the can light relative to the drywall. I would also try putting sound dampening insulation over the lights, like rockwool

A:  Thank you for the question. The SC 175 product is not an adhesive but rather a sealant to help reduce air infiltration and reduce sound transmission. This product is used for exposed and unexposed applications at perimeter joints, floor and ceiling runners, cutouts in gypsum board, veneer plaster systems and other areas where a sound rated assembly is required. The Sealant can also be applied or buttered around all electrical boxes and outlets, cold air returns, heating and air conditioning ducts and other utility equipment penetrating wall surfaces for increased acoustical performance. Works well for sealing sill and base plates in residential construction and non-fire rated systems. Coverage rate is measured in terms of lineal footage: A 1/4” (6 mm) bead extrudes approximately 86 ft. (26 m); A 3/8” (9.5 mm) bead extrudes approximately 38 ft. (12 m). For more details on how to use visit: www.ositough.com or refer to ASTM C919 (Standard Practice for Use of Sealants in Acoustical Applications).

A:  Soundproofing is complicated and takes a lot of different measures all done in tandem to be super successful. This stuff helps if you use it between the drywall and studs (especially at the edges of each drywall sheet), but it won't do a ton by itself. Your might want to also consider a floating ceiling (thin metal pieces are attached perpendicular to the joists and the drywall is then attached to them, largely decoupling the drywall from the ceiling joists). And/or a double layer of drywall might help too. And definitely go for thicker drywall. Oh and you could also do a layer of sound deadening rubber mat under the drywall or between layers.

A:  I don't know but it is not designed to be waterproof, so that would indicate to me it would be better to use a silicone-based caulk that would not be affected by water.
