Q:Can small wood chunks be used in place of chips? I prefer to cut limbs from my apple and pear trees and break them down tosize

Answer This Question

A:  Yes, I prefer Chunks to chips.

by|May 5, 2023

A:  We would recommend standard wood chips that can be purchased at many retailers. You may still use Apple and or Pear. Wood Chips should be kilned dried with a specific moisture content. The best wood chips for smoking are little pieces of wood which are used to enhance the flavors of the meat you are cooking. These smoking chips are available in a variety of flavors and are used for several different kinds of meat.

        Answer This Question

A:  you have to put the chips in water for about 2 hours then remove the chips and placed them in the dry pan inside the smoker.

        by|Aug 25, 2017

A:  U can't put chips in the water bowl. Only in the flame bowl below the water

        by|May 4, 2023

A:  Thank you for your question. Typically, the water would go into its separate reservoir and the wood chips go into the flame disk bowl/wood pan. If the wood chips are no more than 1 cup, there should be no issue with smoke. If you are experiencing an issue, feel free to reach us at www.masterbuilt.com/support.

A:  You can convert it yourself. You will have to use a very small drill bit to enlarge your orifice. I did it to my masterbuilt years ago and it works great

            by|Nov 22, 2018

A:  This smoker will not convert to natural gas.

Q:Can you hold a constant 225 degree temp?

A:  This unit is as close to "set it and forget it" as it gets without a digital timer!!! I've found with mine, just a shade above the low setting(and the rear vent a little less than half open) will get you right at the 225/230 degree mark( get yourself a remote thermometer ). I've had two15/16 lb. briskets, pork butts ribs, etc. and it'll maintain your set temp as long as your propane holds out!!! Pull the trigger, and get one. You'll be glad you did after your first cook!!!

                A:  Easily

                by|May 4, 2023

A:  Yes, it will...easily. Like noted in the previous answer, just a little past low with the vent cracked will be close to 225. However, don't trust the built in thermometer. Mine reads 50 degrees low. I put a ceramic dish in the middle and then measure its temp with a laser thermometer (about $30). I've smoked meat in this smoker in temps all the way from 0 degrees to 100 degrees outside. The cabinet is big enough that the temperature is easy to maintain, and it's fairly consistent between shelves. If the unit can't maintain the temp, then make sure the water pan is full. The humidity that it provides is what helps hold the temperature consistent. Anytime I've had an issue with temp is was because I let the water pan go dry.

Q:How can I purchase the fire bowl for this unit?

                        Answer This Question

A:  This is an old question to answer, but I put a steel pie pan on top of the fire bowl to hold my wood. What I found was that the slots in original fire bowl allowed wood and ashes to fall to the bottom of the unit and make a mess. When I'm finished with a smoking session, I just have to dump the ashes. The legs on my fire bowl rusted really badly to the point it needs to be replaced. However, the bottom of the unit is now rusting out around the hole where the burner is at so I'm replacing the entire unit. At least they died together. If I was looking for a new fire bowl because it rusted out, I would probably just engineer a little three leg stand to hold the pie plate.
