Q:HI I m actually trying to remove this part from the wall so I can just put a 6" arm for a different system How is this Drop Ell attached to the wall exactly?

    Answer This Question

A:  The installation instructions found on the Home Depot website for the Drop Ell show how the usual or standard installation should be done. If installed that way, removing the Drop Ell should only involve unthreading it from a piece of 1/2" pipe sticking out of the wall. You can use a large Philips screwdriver inserted into the water outlet on the ell as a tool to unthread it. Again if it is a standard installation, the 1/2" pipe can then be unthreaded from the shower elbow inside the wall.

A:  It is screwed on just like a shower head. Righty tighty, lefty loosely. Once you have removed whatever is attached to the Drop Ell use a screw driver or pliers handle inserted in the hole and turn counter clockwise. Installation instructions are here https://www.moen.com/shared/docs/product-specifications/a725sp.pdf Good luck

A:  The item unscrews from a pipe. The unit has female threads for the connection to the pipe.

A:  Hello Norby and thank you for your interest in Moen products. The Drop Ell in Chrome is threaded onto the plumbing coming out of the wall. To remove the drop ell you will need to unthread the drop ell counterclockwise. If you have additional questions, please call us at 1-800-289-6636; we are available Monday through Friday from 8:00 am – 7:00 pm Eastern Time.

A:  It's screwed into a 1/2" nipple that's connected to a fitting secured to a stud inside the wall. You should be able to unscrew the fitting by turning it counter-clockwise.

A:  There should be a short pipe coming out the back of the part. This pipe is probably about 2 inches long and has been cut to place the part flush with the wall. Use a pipe wrench to grab the part that is sticking out and unscrew it from the house plumbing (turn it counter clockwise to unscrew it). If you are lucky the short piece of pipe will come out with the part. If the short piece of pipe remains attached to the house plumbing they make a special tool to remove it (see https://www.homedepot.com/p/Armour-Line-1-8-in-1-4-in-3-8-in-1-2-in-and-3-4-in-Pipe-Nipple-Extractors-5-Pack-RP77355/306716049). You probably need the one for 1/2 inch pipe. Remember when installing your new pipe that you should use teflon tape. A small leak inside of the wall can go on for years and by the time you find it extensive damage will probably have been dome.

Q:What do you do with a drop Ell? I am looking for a way to drain a shower /tub moen valve being used in a shower only application. The house will not be heated in winter and I am concerned if I use a copper plug to plug the tub outlet from the valve, that the water trapped in the plug will freeze an cause a leak next spring when the water is turned back on. I am thinking that this ell could be used with a ball valve to drain the water into the shower down near the bottom of the shower wall. Using a Moen Moentrol L 3175 for the shower. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thank you, Rich

                Answer This Question

A:  Hello Rich and thank you for your interest in Moen products. The Moen Circular Drop Ell in Brushed Nickel was designed to be installed with a Moen hand held hose and showerhead. If you are attempting to winterize the valve, we would recommend removing the cartridge, and blowing out any residual water with an air compressor. Water trapped in the plug could potentially freeze and cause a leak. If you have additional pre-purchase questions, please feel free to call 800-289-6636. Our business hours are 8:00 am - 7:00 pm Monday through Friday EST.

Q:When installing this Ell to the nipple protruding from the shower wall are you only supposed to hand tighten? What techniques do your recommend to grasp the Ell to tighten without damaging the attractive fixture?

A:  It been a few years since I installed this. You definitely have to get it tight enough so it does not leak. After hand tightening, I used a large Philips screwdriver that fit in the Ell's outlet to do the final tightening. Just use caution as you don't want to crack or snap the fitting. For me getting the nipple length protrusion right to get the Ell tight to the wall is the challenge.

A:  Insert screw driver or pliers handle in the hole to tighten. It’s metal so it can handle some force. Use electrical tape on the screw driver and pliers so you won’t scratch the metal.

A:  Hello Dosby and thank you for your interest in Moen products. The Moen Drop Ell in Chrome requires thread seal tape on the pipe nipple. You may use silicon sealant around the perimeter of the drop ell if you wish; we do not recommend using any type of rubber washer. If you have additional questions, please feel free to call us at 800-289-6636. Our current business hours are Monday through Friday from 8:00 am - 7:00 pm (Eastern Time).

Q:I have added plumbers tape and putty. Still have a small leak coming from the back of the black plastic threads on the drop ell. I've checked the threads and there doesn't appear to be any cracks. There is a small gap showing as the original hole in my wall (and yes, my original shower head was installed above the tiles of my walk in shower!!!) is slightly larger than the circumference of the drop ell. I've put plumber's putty to try to cover the gap. I guess I wouldn't be as concerned if it was dripping down a tiled surface. However, it is coming down my painted wall. I was told that I should go buy a new drop ell with a metal connection. Just need help. Love my new Kinglsey shower head and slide bar, but am frustrated by the drip every time I turn it on.
