Answer This Question

A:  The MA-R can be use in either location when being used with an MACL-153M in a 3 way or multi-location application. For more information on wiring, please visit the spec sheet of the MACL-153M. https://www.lutron.com/TechnicalDocumentLibrary/369613a.pdf For additional assistance, please reach out to our Support Team at support@Lutron.com or by phone at 1 (844) 588-7661.

A:  No,it does not matter. But, there must be proper 3-way wiring between the switch locations, of course. The installation sheet shows the way to connect the dimmer and companion depending upon which location has the line and which has the load.

    by|Sep 21, 2020

A:  It doesn't matter. Either Master dimmer or Companion dimmer can be placed in either 3-way switch location. Just make sure you mark the Common wire and connect the dimmers properly. Connection diagrams are included with dimmers as well as in product description on product page on HD website.

Q:I have a Lutron Maestro MACL-153MLH-WH master dimmer. I want to use 2 dimmers and know I need a companion dimmer. When I look at the specs that I can find, I don't see one that is a companion dimmer for LED lights. Is either the MA-R or the MA-RR compatible with LED lights?

A:  I utilized Lutron’s customer service for wiring help. They were great and I love my dimmers.

      by|May 18, 2021

A:  The MA-R and MA-RR are the same companion dimmer. These do not have a rating for a lighting load as their only purpose is to send commands back to the MACL-153M.

A:  These companion dimmers themselves are identical. The only difference would be packaging.

A:  Yes, if the bulbs are rated as dimable.

A:  I am using the switch to turn on eight LED bulbs simultaneously in my kitchen and works just fine.

              by|Dec 17, 2019

A:  The MA-R is a companion dimmer to the MACL-153M. The MA-R alone will not control a lighting load. Lutron recommends using the MACL-153M as it is rated for 150W of compatible LED bulbs. To see which LEDs are compatible, please visit www.lutron.com/ledfinder.

Q:Why is this not stocked in all stores? In order to use a MACL-153M with 3 or more switch locations you have to have a MA-R companion dimmer for the other switch locations. Lutron also needs to do a better job informing customers of the requirement for companion dimmers on instructions both online and the instructions in package. Wasted alot of my time.

A:  SMH, thank you for your feedback. This feedback has been passed on to our product development teams. Just to confirm, to use the MACL-153M in a 4-way application, Maestro companion dimmers (model: MA-R) would be required. Q:This doesn't work with LED/CFL? The Maestro master switch works for both Incandescent and LED but this only lists incandescent. Is there one specifically for LED?

                    Answer This Question

A:  Since this product is only the companion and does not work on its own, it does not actually effect the load. As long as the master control that you are pairing this device with is rated to control LED lights, then you should have no issues.

                      Answer This Question

A:  When the master Maestro product, such as the MACL-153M, is in a three way with a mechanical switch, it can work like a standard three way application. In order to accomplish this, you will need to re-wire the mechanical switch as per the MACL-153M's instructions and then program the dimmer to communicate with the mechanical switch.

A:  Unfortunately you cannot. In a three way you have to use one of the MACL-153M-IV and a companion dimmer.

A:  No, that will not work. I just tried to use two MACL-153's in a three way and it didn't work. I called Lutron and they said if you use two MACL-153's they will "fight with eachother". You must use the companion.

A:  The MA-R-WH is a companion dimmer and will only work when used with a Maestro master dimmer, such as the Maestro MACL-153MH-WH. Some master dimmers may be used with a standard mechanical on/off switch for switching, but if you are looking to dim from more than one location, the companion dimmers must be used, along with one master.

A:  The Maestro Multi-location dimmer is designed to work with the companion dimmers, and any mechanical switch in a <= 3 way application. While I have used a Leviton slide dimmer inline with the Maestro, I had humming and finicky operations. I could not tell if the issue was the Leviton, Maestro or my lamps. So, I just replaced the slaves with a compatible companion dimmer and all was well. I have not tried a regular Lutron dimmer, so YMMV.
