The adaptors would plug into the old plugs and the new alarms would plug into the adaptors.

A:  No. And yes. All residential smoke detectors should only be used in areas that are kept between 40 degrees and 100 degrees at the location of the alarm. Ionization alarms can be affected by very high heat and very high humidity, such as steam or heat from cooking or a shower, and the alarms can be made more and more sensitive until they can be set off for a false alarm. Photoelectric alarms are less affected by steam, heat and humidity but enough steam and humidity, especially enough to condense water in the alarm, can still set them off or affect the working of the alarms.
