A:  The shelves are 12 inches apart. When I put the mantle on the top, it's 11 inches above the shelf below it.

A:  Some of these bookshelf units do come with a mantle top, but if they do it usually says so in the product description. I have gotten them both with and without a mantle top, although I generally don't use the top, and it limits the usable height of the top shelf,
