A:  Shortening this rod would very likely damage the inner spring mechanism that provides the tension. I would not attempt. There are other products out there for a shorter width.

If you are asking how to release the tension rod from the area where it is hanging, you would just twist the ends in opposite directions and this would release the rod thereby allowing you to remove the curtain. A:  Depends on the surface it's against. Smooth tile, not much- rough wood- a lot. We have ours on the inside of a window frame (vinyl/smooth) and it holds about 3 lbs.
