Q:Is the trap large enough to hold a 30 - 40lb. beaver? Any idea what to lure them in with, their vegetarian.

Answer This Question

A:  The trap easily held 10lb. raccoons for me. A 30 lb. animal may trip the trap before he is fully in, enabling him to back out. A 40 lb. beaver may be able to bust or gnaw his way out. Lures: cabbage, apple wedges, carrots.... Final answer........I don't know.....Maybe.

A:  I have never trapped a beaver, but I have caught large raccoons that weighed around 25lbs. I have also caught two foxes that were not fully grown. Keep in mind that there is 28 inches between the trip mechanism and the door. The animal needs to be in the trap far enough for the door to snap shut and lock. I have never had any animals get out of the trap once it locks, but some of the raccoons have clawed off the hand protector. I would definitely anchor the trap. I cannot help you with the bait question. I hope this information is of help. Good luck!

A:  I don't think so, it measures 10" X 12" X 32, and is designed for raccoons, cats, groundhogs, opossums, armadillos, skunks, muskrats, etc. Additionally beavers are tough critters and would likely break out of this cage. You would probably be better off with the Havahart X-Large 1-Door Live Animal Cage Trap - https://www.homedepot.com/p/Havahart-X-Large-1-Door-Live-Animal-Cage-Trap-1081/100400784 - It's 15" X 15" X 42" or the Havahart X-Large 2-Door Live Animal Cage Trap. Both available from Home Depot on line. They also sell a "JT Eaton Answer Single Door Live Animal Cage Trap for Medium to Large Size Pests" that you may want to consider. Beavers eat the leaves, inner bark, and twigs of aspen (a favorite food), alder, birch, cottonwood, willow, and other deciduous trees. Beavers also eat shrubs, ferns, aquatic plants, grasses, and crops, including corn and beans.

A:  This trap is best used for armadillos, cats, groundhogs, muskrats, nutria, opossums, raccoons, and skunks. We do not recommend it for beavers.

A:  Yes I hope one gets in my trap. If you use the right bait.

A:  This trap is best used for armadillos, cats, groundhogs, muskrats, nutria, opossums, raccoons, and skunks. We recommend a number of smaller traps for capturing rabbits. Feel free to contact our Consumer Relations Team at 1-855-5-HAVAHART (1-855-542-8242) for additional assistance.

A:  Yes, it will. As long as the rabbit steps on the trap door step with enough weight to spring it. I have not gotten one yet, but I am only using bait to attract raccoons (marshmellows)

                  by|May 4, 2023

A:  Yes it will work for rabbits. A smaller model will work, and be less expensive, but the larger trap will cover a larger range of animals.

                  by|May 5, 2023

A:  A rabbit would definitely fit in it. I haven't tried to catch rabbits though. I bought for ground hogs and raccoons and its been good for that.

A:  More than I ever wanted to catch. Residential area backed up to preserve. Lots of flower bed damage due to heavy digging. This product works great but had to squeeze harder where the door spring slips into the door. The very largest can put their nose in the corner of the door when closed and bend the door back far enough to get out. Bending the door spring slightly outward will increase downward pressure on the door to prevent premature release. If transporting to release be sure to latch down door using anything that will work during transport to prevent excitement on your part with a wild animal running loose in your car. Make sure to put something under the cage during transport for they will relieve themselves. Also roll down all your windows. One trick I've learned is to leave them in the cage for awhile prior to transporting so they tend to drain themselves prior to travel. Place cage along wall of structure open door towards line of travel. Never clean cage. Female urine smell will attract males.

A:  I hired a professional trapping service. They used the same trap to catch the armadillo tearing up my beds. We caught two rabbits, two possum before finally catching the armadillo. Understand that armadillos are blind and you need a serried of garden boarder fence (12" high) to create a funnel to direct them into the trap. It's hit or miss. Took us 6 weeks of trial and error where the activity was before we finally got it. I will buy one or two of these for the next time.....far cheaper than the pros and the same equipment.

A:  I used a 1inch square piece of crispy bacon glued onto a small piece of a paper plate with congealed bacon fat. (By putting it on a plate they can't just turn the trap over and get the bait when it falls through). After catching my two raccoons in two traps, I kept them alive by feeding them baby carrots, so they seem to like that and it might work for bait if you dont have bacon..

I trapped both a cat and a large raccoon (let them both go after they promised not to come back). Trap is very effective. Recommend, though not essential, putting a black plastic bag over trap, leaving entrance open of course, to hid insides.

A:  This trap is intended for larger animals such as full grown cats. The kittens may not be heavy enough to trigger the doors to close.

A:  Keep the door propped open and put food inside, so the kittens get used to going in to eat. Do this for a few days. They will not be suspicious when you are really going to catch them.

                                                        by|May 4, 2023

A:  Two summers ago I got a kitten in this same trap. Now "The Massive Mouse", when he bats at you it's like being hit with a soft dowel, but then young enough to be socialized - really small, in other words. It helps that kittens aren't yet as smart as cats - also, like all their traps you can fiddle with the trip latch to set it to a hair trigger. ...Handy hints: go up one row in the back end, cut/saw out 3 vertical wires to leave a slot for a "kipper snacks" bait can (not every sardine can will fit), file the cuts flat or an animal will bloody itself on them. And keep the box it came in (cut a slit halfway down the top for the handle) or figure out how you are going to carry a big raccoon at arm's length to keep from being clawed. The top is just as bad, but until Havahart figures this out the box trick works (also keeps your vehicle clean), or you could just make a shield out of hardware cloth to slip over it.
