To remove it, gently press up on the glass an twist counterclockwise to unscrew it. This fan's direction is controlled by the remote control, there is no reverse switch. It sounds as though you have a different fan. This fan has always included a remote control. Typically the reverse switch is located either just above the light kit or at the top of the fan.
