A: The main area of the pilasters has a projection of 1 3/4", the cavity behind the fluted area is 1 3/8".

A: I’m not a 100% sure, but most times it’s only for decoration and it usually isn’t supporting any weight other than the top section which is secure with fasteners and glue.
