Q:I see the hatchet is relatively short, and that this axe is only 23" long. Is there any reason to buy the hatchet? It would seem that this axe is short enough to double as a hatchet as well as an axe. Any words from folks who have used both? Thanks!

A:  this is what I call a camp axe . it is easy to carry on you backpack and a great size for cutting and splitting firewood . it can be used to cut small trees but if cutting larger ones I recommend an axe with a longer handle

Q:Can this axe be sharpened as usual? (Noticed the "proprietary factory grinding" in specs.)

      Answer This Question

A:  You can sharpen it like any other axe. The trick is that the factory sharpening is not like standard axes for the angle and length making it hard to match so that you will likely change the effectiveness slightly (from a new axe).

A:  I've sharpened the smaller version x17 and that still worked fine after sharpening it. So you could do the same on this one too.

          Answer This Question

A:  Thank you for contacting Fiskars. The all-purpose design of the X15 Chopping Axe makes felling trees quick and easy. Blade was designed to bite deeper when chopping and felling trees. With more blade penetration on each swing, you can chop more wood in less time, with less effort and hand strain.

A:  That’s a pretty vague question but yes, it’s a great tool especially for its compact size and will keep up with the abuse of taking down trees if needed

Q:where is it made! i've bought at least half-dozen fiskars products. the ones made in finland are OUTSTANDING. the ones from china - a shovel, a pair of loppers, and that pathetic little sharpener - are awful. based on the price of this item, it's hard to tell if it's a high-quality finnish product or not..

A:  The sticker on the handle of the X-15 chopping ax states it is made in Finland. It is seriously sharp and keeps its edge. The sharpener is plasticky but does work well on the ax.

A:  The axe I received is made in Finland and is exactly as advertised. There is no comparison with European products which are first rate and those made in China which are really a luck of the draw. Some are good, some aren't worth the price of the wrapper.

A:  Yes, works well with either one or two hands. I usually "choke up" a little with one hand to to make repeated swings easier. I'm 72 years old, but in pretty good shape--would have been easy to use in any manner 20-30 years ago. :-)

A:  Certainly! I quite often use it with one hand only (grabbing the handle a little further up) when chopping smaller pieces. This axe in my opinion is great value per money.

A:  Yes. I use it to split wood down at home after it has been split with a longer one in the field. I use it one handed to split kindling, etc.

A:  If your nickname is Sasquatch, you can certainly use this like a hatchet. For the rest of us mortals this is a two handed ax. Be aware this is a razor sharp Finnish blade and one handed high jinks will reward you with serious injury/amputations.

A:  You could use it one handed if you grasp it half way up the handle. But, it's more of an axe than a hatchet.

A:  No! It is purposely meant to be used with both hands. It is an outstanding axe though. One handed use is extremely dangerous. Fiskars does make several outstanding axes with long and short handles.

A:  Good question. Not sure, but I’ve seen it advertised at 3.6 lbs and mine feels about that. The vast majority of the weight is in the head which I’d estimate would be at around 2.5 lbs.
