A: I installed several of these shims under my toilet on an unlevel Mexican tile.
I placed the thin edge of several shims at different locations around the front and sides of the toilet base. I gently tapped each shim with a hammer (tap very, very, very lightly) to make certain the shim will hold. Then score each shims with a box cutter to remove the excess shim. And finally, caulk the front and sides only leaving the back open. The caulking should hide the shims if you trimmed the shims short enough. Good Luck

A: Well, it depends what the new toilet comes with. If its a new toilet, in the box there is usually a new wax ring and a new set of flange bolts. If its a used toilet, you will need both of those.

A: Most new toilets come with the parts you need. If you have to buy the parts then buy toilet flange bolts with nuts and cosmetic covers and a wax ring assembly. You should also purchase a package of plastic shims to level the toilets if necessary.

A: I used a hacksaw. Mark with pencil, and cut inside the line, then it won't be visible after caulking.

A: Hello Akua,
I score the shims with a utility knife. For the toilet shims I test fit it and mark the cut area. I then back it out and score it on the reverse side. It make snapping it once installed much easier. I hope this helps.
Cheers,
Chris

A: You need to push grout underneath the toilet all the way around the toilet. You then remove the shims after the grout sets. Fill the holes where the shims were with more grout. You can reuse the shims for another job.

A: They do not look like pvc to me but they hold up well.

A: There are no markings on the part, so there's no way of knowing without testing it. Since it is an injection molded part, I would guess PLA or ABS.

A: Use shims then caulk it. You might have to use more than one pack depending on how uneven your floor is.

A: Buy the new ring that is not wax that the lower part fits into your pipe. It will settle level and your problem will be gone. Also you never have to replace it.

A: Check that the bolts are tight, don't over tighten. If the toilet was secure before and started rocking then perhaps the bolts are loose or the flange is cracked. Some of the bolt cover caps snap on, some others screw on, remove and check the bolts. If the toilet was secure before and started rocking it is important to discover why, you don't want sewer gas leaking into your living space. Use shims to steady the toilet if no other problems exist. The toilet should be level side to side and front to back.

A: Yes, try shimming it with this. I just shimmed one of my rental's toilets today and it worked well. Caulk around it to hold the shim in place. Try not to shim just in one place but if you do one side, do another side as well. Say it lifts at the 12 o'clock position, shim it at the 10 and 2 position.
