Q:how much space is needed between the back side of the peg board and the wall it is being mounted on, to accommodate the portion of the hook that protrudes through the peg holes. I know the peg board cannot be mounted directly to the wall.

A: No. They are only four inches long and cannot be attached to the shelf to stabilize it. They are best used to hang tools and other items.

A: The prongs o.d. is 1/25" and i.d. is 1.0 ". A hammer fits between them but is a very snug fit.
