A:  We don't use a grid, and I guess you are talking about a metal grid. Really don't mind if it gets scratched up. But we have another porcelain sink that we don't want to be scratched up so we use a flexible plastic mat on the bottom that is quite a bit like a grid as it has a grid of perhaps 1/4 inch or so holes in a rectangular pattern. It doesn't have a big hole for where the drain is but that doesn't seem to matter, that kind catches the large stuff you don't want going down the drain anyway. We've replaced it several times over the years and I know that in at least one occasion we did just cut a drain hole in one. And with plastic if you can't find the right size you can cut down a larger one to fit.
