A:  yes you need the expansion space

                by|Aug 8, 2023

A:  I think that you need to give the rock room to expand, at least a little bit. This stuff pushes outward and creates a "fault" in the rock. if you don't drill the hole big/deep enough into the rock, the material will push "up" instead of "out", or it will pop like a rocket (which happened to me a few times). If the material around the rock will give a little bit, the Dexpan should be able to crack the rock.

A:  Depending on the size of the rock. It makes it easier to pull rock apart once it is done splitting. Dig before or after it doesn't matter.

A:  My granite rock was 8ft x 5ft and 5ft deep, only 2ft was above ground. Dexpan cracked it. Just to be sure It was all the way thru, I put a wedge in the crack and hit it with a sledge. This opened the crack from 1/4" to over an inch and it was split completely thru.
