Answer This Question

A:  Yes to both questions. I installed the photo cell in a coach light (one of two) nearest the switch to power both lights on/off at dusk/dawn. The trick is to move some wiring out of the way in the junction box to make room for the cell housing. Place the cell in the box then put a dab of shave cream on the sensor. Replace the fixture and remove again. You should have a nice little dot of foam on the fixture exactly where a hole will be drilled. My sensor has been installed for several years and still works perfectly.

A:  No you dont have to drill on the light fixture, this can be installed away from fixture. If you know what you doing it will take five mins to install very easy love it.

A:  You might run the risk of this product not working correctly mounting it to the light fixture as the brightness of the light might turn it off when you want it on. Yes a hole would need to be drilled and the back portion and it does need to be protected from the elements. We useully install these in a switch box that controls the circuit away from the actual light fixture. You might look at other style photo cells if one light is what your trying to control. We use a screw in type that screws into the light socket. Another way is to install a smart switch to where the light is controled. Home Depot carries all of the above.

A:  Yes you have to drill a hole. The end of the threaded portion of the photo cell has to stick out of the fixture in order to sense the lighting conditions in order for it to work. Yes room is a problem on most types of fixtures. If you read an earlier post of mine I stated that the three wires coming out of the side of the photo cell is a problem. Unless you have a larger fixture you will have a problem. I barley had enough room in mine. Keep in mind you cannot face that photo cell lens towards the bulb otherwise it will blink off and on, instead of staying on. Face both photocells opposite of each other. Good luck

A:  Yes, unless there already is one. If so, not a big deal but be sure it's where it can catch the light.

A:  Instructions from the manufacture. installation Instructions: Use With Weatherproof Light Fixture Enclosures Having 3/8” Diameter Mounting Hole Read All Instructions Completely Before Beginning Installation. CAUTION: TO PREVENT INJURY FROM ELECTRICAL SHOCK AND POSSIBLE RISK OF DEATH, POWER MUST BE TURNED OFF AT THE MAIN CIRCUIT BREAKER OR AT THE MAIN FUSE BOX BEFORE INSTALLING PHOTOCONTROL. Use only U. L. Listed wire connectors (not included). All metal strands of wires MUST be completely inside wire connectors. Wrap electrical tape in multiple layers to further secure the connections. Connect the red wire from the Photo Control to the black wire of the light fixture. Connect the black wire from the Photo Control to the black (hot power supply) wire. Connect all of the white wires (neutral) together. The body of control must be located inside weatherproof electrical enclosure. Insert the nipple through the hole and screw the nut on enclosed gasket tight enough to make a weatherproof seal. If the surface is uneven, apply RTV silicone rubber sealing compound before installing photocontrol. Turn power on. Photo Eye has up to 2-minutes delay when turning the power On/Off.

        by|May 6, 2023

A:  Turn off the power to the light your working on. Remove the old sensor by removing the screw and cutting the wires. Should be one black wire and one white. Rewire the new sensor and screw it back in place. Turn the power back on it should work fine.

Q:Can this be used for a lamppost with 3 lights on it? Can’t get it to turn on after installing and triple checked wires.

A:  If the 3 bulbs don't exceed the 500 watt total I don't see why not. There are post type sensors available which do the same thing.

          by|May 6, 2023

A:  I would suspect that your lights draw to much power to light up the three bulbs, This product is actually only a 4.2 Amp unit, package and online specs will tell you 15 amps. we have used this with three lamp light and two but have had to change bulbs. LED bulbs can give you a solution if matched to proper specs of this product or look for a larger capasity photocell that will match to you lights draw.

A:  I went to the local hardware store and I couldn’t find a but that fit the photo cell. Sorry I couldn’t help.

            by|May 5, 2023

A:  I did not use a 2nd nut. In my application, I could not use one, but I don't see why one is needed as long is the eye is not out too far.

              by|May 5, 2023

A:  Hole is 7/16 however we have never found a standard nut size to work with this thread. We always just put washers behind the plate to adjust to our spec. We have in the past used brass nuts from lighting and lamp, parts and let it cut a new thread. Washers are much easier . Good luck

                  A:  No

                  by|May 5, 2023

A:  If the sensor is mounted where the lightbulb shines on it when the sensor turns on the light, then that could be a possible problem. but I doubt that you installed it that way. As I remember, the first day I installed mine, it did not work right that first night, but worked fine there after. Temperature does not seem to affect my sensor at all. If the sensor is placed in a dark garage, the light would stay on all the time, assuming no sunlight in that area.

                    by|May 5, 2023

A:  It only has three wires and yes there is a slant on one side. The difficult part is the three wires are mounted on the side of it which means you need more than 3/4" depth mounting space to point it away from the lantern.

                    by|May 6, 2023

A:  I don’t think the temperature is causing your issue. Operating range is -5 to 135 degrees. One of the things we see is when mounted outside and the circuit is its usually mounted to close to a light which is activating the switch to close after it opens. If this is the case maybe reorientation of the photocell might help. This unit only has three wires, line is black, load is red and the white is neutral. See pics

A:  No, I have installed about 20 of the with no problems outside.

A:  If you talking about a dimmable LED bulb, then YES, the dusk to dawn switch will work fine. If the light fixture itself is dimmable, I would think that it would depend on how the light fixture is wired, but if wired right, I would think the dusk to dawn switch would work with that too.
