A: Diamonds, contrary to popular belief are not forever. The steel matrix can fail to hold the chips when you use high surface pressures trying to achieve a quick result! Unlike a oil-whetstone, this does not "load," that's why the holes are present -- to avoid loading.

A: Hello, We would suggest a bit of aggressive cleanser such as Comet or similar and a stiff nylon bristled brush. Give it a good scrubbing and rinse well; store dry as always. To check diamond: rub the surface with a smooth piece of glass, if it etches the glass (diamond cuts glass), then the diamond is present and still working. Thank you for choosing DMT Sharpeners. Best regards, Kris

A: I use a little bit of Dawn liquid soap, warm water & a fine stiff nylon bristle brush or firm toothbrush. It usually does the trick. If not, try a fine brass scrub brush with warm or hot water.

Answer This Question
A: I would not think so, the edges are not used for sharpening and the flat surfaces are too big for a chain

A: It is not the tool I would use, it is designed for knives and the curve of a chainsaw blade tooth would be very difficult with this sharpener.

A: If you can maintain the correct angle while using this hone, yes. Being a diamond hone it will fairly quickly put as edge in a knife.

A: It worked well on pocket knives, my long knives and the kitchen variety too. I use a steel frequently on the kitchen knives, but this added a finer edge

A: Any knife, chisel, planet blades

A: It works nicely to an edge on a pocket knife, may need a more course tool if the edge is really beat up.

A: Depends upon how you use it. Light, slow, gentle movement over the surfaces will enhance the useful life by not causing stress fractures or crushing of the diamonds!

A: Depends upon the way in which you use it. Light pressure, gentle movement will make it last longer than striving for extremely rapid material removal!

A: My first is two years old still going strong

A: Hello AW,
This should last you years, some have lasted 30+ years, with proper care; no oils just water for lubricant, clean occasionally with powdered cleanser(Ajax, Comet etc.) and a stiff nylon brush, store dry. Hope this has helped.
Have a great day!

A: I've had a Smith hone I've used for years and hundreds of knives. I world anticipate it will last until you lose it or break it. I suppose you could wear it out but that will take significant use.
