A:  DEWALT complies with federal, state and local laws regarding its products. One such law exists in California called Proposition 65, that requires the manufacturers of products to warn those people who use the product if the user can be exposed to certain chemical substances while using the product. The list of chemical substances can be found in the Proposition 65 law, and can be changed periodically by the State of CA. DEWALT products are made from many materials necessary to the proper functioning of the product. For example, many electrical cords are made from a rubberlike material called polyvinyl chloride (PVC), and that PVC often contains lead., which is necessary in the PVC to withstand heat and keep the cord flexible. Because of the lead in the electrical cord, a warning must be placed in the instruction manual in order to comply with the Prop 65 warning requirement. However, because DEWALT cannot distinguish the products it sells in California from the products it sells in the other 49 states, it must put the warning in its owner's manual on every product it makes in order to make sure it is complying with the California law.
