Q:I have installed (4) white standards, 84" h x 1" (closet maid )into my garage rear wall. The width of this installation is every 48". My plan was to install 17" silver closet maid silver brackets (16" x .5) with the intention of using no additional horizontal hardware. The span across this back wall is 16' with the standards resting on the floor base & screwed into the studs using 3" screws. At least (4) screws are drilled into the studs.
I have planned to use 16" deep x 72" wide gray wire shelving across the standards, assuming the load would be adequate. Will this set-up be strong enough to store boxes on the shelves? I plan to proportion the weight appropriately.
Is there any real difference in the 16" deep gray shelving structurally vs. the closet maid (white) illustrated above?
The house is less than a year old.
Thank you!

A: Hello 6430,
Thank you for your recent inquiry about the ClosetMaid SuperSlid White Ventilated Wire Shelf. Assuming you are referring to the Max Load Garage Satin Chrome Ventilated Wire Shelf System the difference will be the weight capacity. The Maximum Load products can hold up to 600 lbs. per 6 ft. shelf. Thank you for shopping Home Depot.

A: I don’t know the weight capacity, but we used them in a pantry with no problem. The important thing is to have the brackets no more than 24” apart.

A: Hello,
Our wire shelving can be cut for a customized length with a hacksaw or bolt cutters. You would have to ask an associate at the retail store selected to confirm if that is an option for them to cut the shelving for your.
Thank you for your inquiry.

A: Most of them will. Plus, it will make it easier to get into your car. Just make sure you have measured absolutely perfectly where you’re going to put it. Don’t forget to leave about half a centimeter extra on your measurements for the protective and caps. Remeasure it after they cut to make sure that you have the right length. And careful, the ends are VERY sharp after being cut. Put caps on the ends before you load it into your car or maybe even before you put it back on your shopping cart.

Answer This Question
A: I have purchased 7 or 8 of these and cut them to several different lengths with a hacksaw. The only issue is when you cut it, the end needs to be filed down a bit to get rid of sharp edges.

A: It is a simple process to use a metal cutter like a hack saw. Just be sure to leave a little nub so you can put one of the end caps that are available so you don't scratch your walls.

A: Yes no problem when using a standard hack saw.
by|Nov 1, 2020
A: sure....simply use a metal blade cutting hack saw or any blade that will cut metal. The vinyl covering is just that. Be sure to measure twice and cut once. also, try to cut as close to the previous wire as possible (the one that stays) so that you can use connectors to other shelves as needed, or leave a small nub so you can use the end caps that they provide.

A: Yes. The ends are designed to hold a plastic cap (which is extra) so you just cut it to the length you desire and then attach the caps.

A: Yes. I used a hack saw to cut these 72" shelves down to approx. 50" and 54". Since the cut ends are next to the wall I don't have to worry about any rough edges.
