Q:How long of a cooktime at about 225 can you get on a single load of lump/how much lump to load

    Answer This Question

A:  Cook times will vary based on the amount and type of lump charcoal! Lump charcoal will burn longer than briquettes will. For specific times and recipes we recommend checking out www.barbecuebible.com! Thank you!

A:  I have smoked a pork roast at about 300 degrees "f" for about four hours using lump charcoal . I think it was about five Lbs. I started out with a small fire 'about two hand full's ' then added the rest an hour later. there was still hot coals when I was done.

      by|May 5, 2023

A:  At least 8 hours. On a full chimney, with the minion method on your charcoal. This thing is a tank when it comes to long cooks.

        by|May 5, 2023

A:  As with anyhthing new (as I am with my char-griller,} I suspect we'll just have to dive in and pay attention to proper adjustments of air flow for heat regulation. As far as how much lump charcoal to use. Too much or too little will take practice. More fuel is better as when food is done, close all dampers. This allows fire to smother and save remaining fuel for the next cook. Hope that helps, Woody

A:  I use a combination of charcoal and wood chunks. I have not had to add additional fuel to keep the fire going. I was pleasantly surprised to find that it uses very little fuel to cook with.

              Answer This Question

A:  No, I t took some time to assemble it. The cart was the part that took the longest time. You can always have them assemble it at the store.

              by|May 4, 2023

A:  We bought ours at a Home Depot store and asked them to put it together for us. Otherwise, if you order online to come to your house, I doubt that it would be. If you buy online for store pickup, then you can request them to put it together. Sometimes that is offered on the site with in-store pick up, so be sure to look for that.

                by|May 4, 2023

A:  No it comes in a box and needs to be assembled

                  by|May 4, 2023

A:  We recommend checking with your local store for assembly questions! Most stores offer to assemble the unit for a low cost! Thank you.

Q:Okay, in looking at the depth of the grill, it seems as though the charcoal would be sitting too low to sear steak or hamburgers. However, I've read on the reviews that it can be done. Are there any special hints (use more charcoal or let the grill heat up more)???

A:  Nope easily gets above 600 degrees. Can sear the heck out of burgers and steaks if wanted. I also use it for low and slow smoking at 225-250.

A:  Our Ashpans are adjustable using the grate hangers! You can have the charcoal closer to the grates or farther away! Thank you.

A:  The grill does get hot enough to sear, using approximately the same amount of charcoal as in a Weber - however it works best if you allow the cooker to heat up first since the heat source is a bit further from the cooking surface. The depth of the cooker actually prevents hot spots that you get on a standard grill for things like steaks and burgers, but it is intended to cook with the lid closed rather than an open grill. Alternatively, the charcoal grate from a 22" Weber ($10 part) does fit perfectly over the smoking stone brackets if you want to move the heat source up - I have done this for flash cooking things like prawns and it works great.

A:  I don't use 'more' coal per-se ( Royal Oak Lump! ) ... I just make sure that the distribution of hot coals reaches around to the area I am cooking on, close the lid, open the vents, wait a few minutes for the grate to get really hot (grill temp 400 degrees or so). Trust me, it works fine. I have been 'grilling' for more than 30 years, and 'cooking' for the past few. This Grill allows both, and I love to 'cook' on it. My advice, buy this grill, ( and the cover ), learn how to use it, throw out your old gas grill and your weber.

A:  I have used an 18" (I think) diameter grill grate which sits on the tabs that hold the diffuser stone. The tabs sit about 3-4" below the cooking grate. Build your fire on that, and it's immediately under the food. A small piece of expanded metal (available at HD) is handy to keep the coals from falling through the grate. I have used this technique for steaks and burgers. It's also good if you have a cast iron griddle or skillet.

A:  Piece of cake, easiest setup I've ever dealt with. I clean mine about every 4-5 cooks. I imagine if you let It grow and get out of control it would interfere with the vents... it would also probably retain moisture which isn't good. Buy this thing - ( and the cover ) - use Royal Oak Lump - !

A:  The damper on the ash pan plays a huge roll in controlling the temperature! The greater the air flow, the hotter the unit will get! Our Kamado units have an easy dump ash pan! Thank you.

A:  Yes, ash catcher is easy to remove and empty - the catcher is suspended in the center by keeper knob that fits into a steel bracket and then locks in place with clasps on the outside of the cooker to compress the seal material. The air intake is located above the ash collection area and is not affected by normal accumulation - you can actually cook on it multiple times w/o emptying.

A:  Geno, My ash catcher is held on with two draw latches 180 degrees apart. The left side latch is very easy to reach. The right side one is a little tricker since it's under the cart top and your view is blocked. Once you unlatch them, the ash catcher is held by a clever arrangement of "Y" shaped heavy round wire mounted to the kettle and a round raised button on the catcher. This allows you to slide the catcher out and back in while keeping it at the correct height to get the latched resecured. You want to do any ash removal to a COLD grill, before you start cooking. Removal of the ash catcher opens up the entire bottom of the grill. You will have no control over air intake or temperature. I've had my Akorn Kamado 6520 for 5 years and Love It. Best of Luck,

Q:Where did the Manual/warranty info go ? Seems to have been streamlined to get rid of the link but now the 5 year bottom -end rust info is missing? I say this because I recall seeing something about it have to be returned in original packaging material, technically if it was assembled at Home depot, normally the carton would be discarded. Could this be a pretense to void the warranty?

A:  cast iron grate is 19.5" dia (~300 sq. in.) and warming grate above is 13.5" diam (~150 sq.in.). Slightly smaller than a 22" Weber, but the depth of the grill allows you to use the entire surface w/o rotating around hot spots and the warming grate is very useful.
