Q:Can I use this wire to wire my dryer

    Answer This Question

A:  You will need to consult with a local licensed electrician to make sure it meets all your local codes.

    by|May 4, 2023

A:  No you must have a 3 conductor cable of at least 10 gage wire capable of safely handling 240 volts and at least 30 amps

      by|Dec 5, 2020

A:  Typically, dryers require 30 amps of power, and this gauge wire will only go up to 20 amps. Double check the amperage capacity of your dryer, and if it is 30 amps, you'll need to use the heavier 10-3 NM gauge wire.

      by|Feb 14, 2017

A:  No it is not the right gauge you need to use a 10/2 wgr.

      by|Jul 18, 2021

A:  if it is a gas dryer that only requires power to the motor, then this 12 gauge - [2 conductor + ground] wire should work.. if it is a standard 220volt electric dryer, then no. you will likely need 10 gauge wire [3 conductor plus ground].

A:  Thank you for contacting Cerro with your product inquiry. I am so sorry to hear you were not able to get the product you needed. Unfortunately, Cerrowire is not carried in the Tupelo market. We would suggest contacting that store location for further inventory questions specific to that location. However, if you have any further questions please let us know.

A:  When you set your local store at the top left of this page you can easily see if the item is stocked or not, you can also see how much, if any, is currently in stock. Next time do your homework and save some miles.

Q:I'm replacing the wire to our swimming pool. Can I use this wire if its enclosed in PVC conduit?

          Answer This Question

A:  No, absolutely not! NM-B cable is for indoor dry installations only and is not approved to be used outdoors at all. It cannot be used in conduit outdoors as outdoor conduit is rated as a wet location by the NEC.

A:  Thank you for contacting Cerro with your product inquiry. Unfortunately, we do not have enough information to adequately or safely advise you, so we would suggest you contact a local, licensed electrician in order to get answers for your questions about your project. We can tell you, though, that we would not recommend 12/2 NM-B wire for this project as it is not rated for outdoor used, not rated for wet locations. I hope that helps.

A:  Yes if you're protecting in from UV with conduit, than you can use this wire, just make sure it's suitable for the loads.

A:  Thank you for contacting Cerro with your product inquiry. It is not recommended to use NM-B wire outside, however we would suggest the UF wire which would work better for that application and usage.

                    Answer This Question

A:  Here is what NM-B means: NM-B cable is the most common form of indoor residential electrical wiring. The “NM” stands for non-metallic, which refers to the flexible, generally PVC sheathing surrounding the cable. The “B” represents a heat rating of 194-degrees Fahrenheit. This rating ensures wires can operate at certain levels without overheating, melting the insulation and creating fire and safety hazards. Inside the sheathing are at least two thermoplastic insulated wires of the same gauge, though different cables can have different gauges. As with wire, all the information you need to know about NM-B cable is printed on the sheathing. The 12/2 is the gauge of the wire. A 10/2 cable is thicker (higher gauge) and is meant for large appliances and such. 12/2 (and 14/2) are meant for residential use for standard electrical work. 12/2 is rated for 20A, while 14/2 is rated for 15A. In my example, 12 and 14 are the wire gauge, and the 2 is the number of wires inside the sheathing. Most electrical wiring also includes a ground, but it is just copper wiring (usually) and not the same gauge, which is fine. To be safe, if you are doing residential work, I would go with 12/2.
