Q:What size screw would I need for a 2X6 redwood deck board?

Answer This Question

A:  Thank you for your CAMO question, For nominal 2x decking, use 2-3/8" CAMO Fasteners. With Redwood material, we recommend stainless steel fasteners to reduce the chance of tannin reaction or streaking. Check out Home Depot Item #203040866 for what should work in your situation. Q:What keeps treated deck boards from cupping?
    by|Mar 10, 2020

    Answer This Question

A:  Thank you for your CAMO question! The CAMO Edge Deck Fastening System provides a secure hold because your deck boards are secured directly to the substructure by the CAMO Edge Deck Screws. However, some treated lumber is being sold extremely wet/green and board cupping can occur as the board dries. To combat this we recommend a few options: - Allow the treated lumber to dry prior to installation - Utilize KDAT deck boards (Kiln Dried After Treatment) as this options allows the wood to dry more evenly and will decrease the wood's natural tendency to cup, warp or shrink - Install your treated deck boards "frown down" (installing the boards incorrectly "curve up" is not recommended because cupping may occur resulting in possible moisture retention and board rot) Thank you for viewing this CAMO product! -Team CAMO

Q:What size screws should I use for 5/4 Ipe? Are the 1-7/8 ok or should I go with the 2-3/8?

      Answer This Question

A:  I personally would use the 2 3/8", but I'm not a pro....I do know Ipe' is pretty tough to screw through without first drilling with a drill bit made for that job. I think they make special screws that have a starter drill end on them. I will say the 316 screws are the best I could find as I'm on the ocean and they don't rust.

A:  Per the Camo website, that is the manufacturer's recommendation for 5/4 decking.

        by|Oct 20, 2019

A:  Thank you for your CAMO question. If your deck boards measure more than 1" in thickness, then we recommend you utilize the CAMO 2-3/8" Edge Deck Screws. For Ipe decking, we also recommend using our 316 Stainless Steel fasteners, to prevent tannic reactions that may occur due to the acidity of Ipe. You also will want to pre-drill, due to the density of the deck boards and softer nature of the stainless steel fasteners. All the CAMO Marksman Tools will work with the CAMO Edge Deck Screws, regardless of screw length. Thank you for viewing this CAMO product! -Team CAMO

Q:What size screw should I use for 1x6 (0.75x5.5) Garapa hardwood deck boards?

                Answer This Question

A:  Thank you for your CAMO question. When installing 1x6 decking, we recommend you use the CAMO 1-7/8" Edge Deck Screws as they are designed for installing boards 3/4" to 1" in thickness. Please keep in mind, when using CAMO to install a hardwood such as garapa, we recommend you use the 316 Stainless Steel CAMO Edge Deck Screws. You can use the ProTech Coated CAMO Edge Deck Screws, but the tannin release (found in certain hardwood decking material such as garapa, ipe, mahogany, redwood, etc) and the acidity of the deck board may cause staining and streaking when a non-stainless steel fastener is used. Additionally, when installing hardwood decking with Stainless Steel CAMO Edge Deck Screws, pre-drilling is recommended due to the density of the decking material. This will allow for easier installation and an even cleaner look. Pre-drill instructions can be found on camofasteners.com, in the installation guide of your CAMO Marksman Tool or you can purchase the CAMO Pre-Drill Bit (model #0345035). A:  well I don't know what Garapa hardwood deck boards are. I redid my deck 2 years ago with regular pretreated deck boards from home depot. I coated them with 2 coats of an oil finish before I installed them just to add extra protection. I used camo deck screws 1-7/8" x 7, 316 stainless steel trimhead plus the camo jig to guide the screws and space the boards. Every thing worked out well. It is time consuming to do it that way. It took me 4 weeks doing 4 boards at a time. I coated the boards as previously mentioned and let them dry which took a day for each set. I then removed 4 0f the old boards which was a pain because the old screws were eaten up by rust. A nail puller was used frequently. Installing the new boards was basically simple with the camo jig. I like the look of the boards with no screws showing. And, the stainless steel screws should last a long time.

                  Answer This Question

A:  CAMO Hidden Deck Screws come in 1-7/8" or 2-3/8" lengths. The 1-7/8" is designed for use with deck boards that are 3/4" - 1" thick. The 2-3/8" screws are designed for use with deck boards that are 1" - 1-1/2" thick. The 2-3/8" screws can be used for installing the thinner deck board (3/4" - 1" in thickness), but the extra length is not required to ensure the board is properly secured to the substructure.
