Q:does the wood for the smoke go on top off the charcoal or in the upper pan
      by|Nov 1, 2014

      Answer This Question

A:  depends on your technique. I like to soak the wood chips for an hour, then let them sit directly on top of the coal. Gives you a great smoked flavor!

      by|May 3, 2023
      1 found this answer helpful

A:  On top of the charcoal. Let your wood chunks soak for an hour or so before adding to hot embers.

      by|May 3, 2023
      1 found this answer helpful

A:  Start out with a couple "chunks" in the pan before adding the charcoal then add on top and stir after that.

A:  The best result is to wrap tin foil around your fist & make a 'vase' of sorts. Place it to left or right of the access door in the charcoal pan so you can check on its progress. It can be used three times before it breaks down. Don't buy the metal boxes because they'll rust up in no time. Also, once the wood is gone, you can pull the vase out because you only need to smoke during the initial part of the cook time.

        1 found this answer helpful

A:  The wood chips (chunks last longer) should be soaked in water for at least an hour before putting them in the top pan above the coals. With about 20 pieces of wood I get from 2-3 hours of full smoke - more than enough to cook the meat to perfection.

A:  Brinkmann does manufacture a retrofit kit electric element for this smoker. But consider this; The smoker/grill costs $49 (as of this date) and the retrofit kit is listed (this date) on their website for $45.50. Total is $94.50 + tax. A Brinkmann Gourmet Electric smoker/grill (same size and shape) sells for $79.95. Do the math.

                  by|May 2, 2023

A:  The "Smoke 'N Grill" has no element. You would ignite the charcoal in the usual way such as a chimney, an electric element that you buy separately, or, heaven forbid, charcoal fluid or match lite. If you wanted to add wood chips to the charcoal, just throw some in, pre-soaked of course.

A:  The only device i have seen is the Brinkman Electric Charcoal Lighter Model #812-9137-S. I am not sure if it can be used safely with the Brinkman Smoker because of where the charcoal bowl is located. Be careful with this.

                  by|May 2, 2023

A:  There isn't a unit like that available. They only have the electric charcoal starter.

                  by|May 2, 2023

A:  Yes if you want your electric bill to soar.

                  by|May 3, 2023

A:  I do not know of any, but using a charcoal starter (cylinder), helps to get the charcoal hot before putting it into the charcoal tray. If you soak the wood well, (overnight), this will give a good smoke and help to keep the coals at a good temperature.

A:  Yes, if you are using the smoker in conjunction with wood, to add the smoke flavor, you will generate a good amount of smoke for the duration in which you plan on adding the smoke flavor. In short .... yes.

                      by|May 2, 2023

A:  Normally any “smoker” will emit smoke during use. Most people like to see smoke when they are cooking. If you are using the dome smoker as a grill or a smoker and using charcoal (no wood chips) for heat, the smoke will be minimized once the charcoal has turned to a white color. We don’t think this type of cooking would alarm the neighbors. If you add wood chips to the charcoal, this will normally create considerable smoke for 15-30 minutes. Thank You Brinkmann

A:  This unit can generate a lot of smoke and it really depends on the fire. When I loaded up the firebox with charcoal and wet wood, it smoked quite a bit for about 45 to 60 minutes until the fire was hot. The houses in my neighborhood are about 10 to 12 feet from each other, so I put my smoker in the front of the house away from areas a lot of people would be in. I had no complaints from my neighbors because everyone had the AC on. But when people have their windows open I think this could be a problem.

A:  I have only experienced excessive smoke immediately after adding charcoal or wood chips and this only lasts for about 5 minutes, then the smoking process returns to normal with just a little smoke coming out and even that is not continuos. Try to position the Smoker so the wind, if any carrries the smoke away from your building.

A:  No, not if you are using the proper types of woods, fruit woods work best. In fact there is very little smoke while the smoker is actually cooking.

                        by|May 2, 2023

A:  You have to make it smoke. This is a two-way grill, fire pan in top makes it a normal grill; but arranging the fire pan in the bottom for more indirect heat makes it a "smoker". But to add smoke and smoke flavor, you would need to soak some hardwood chips in water (slow their burning) and get them to smoulder in the fire pan (it's that easy). That's when the smoke (lets really call it the "taste magic") occurs. Otherwise, you get no more smoke than a regular grill. I agree with others, tho. Once the aroma of anything from the grill starts circulating, especially if you add smoke, you better make enough for all your visitors who will conveniently show up at meal time.

A:  Actually when smoking correctly, there is only a very light smoke from the smoker. If you over smoke the food taste, well like burned wood. Use only fruit type wood, apple and such also. Everyone will try to see you hickory and mesquite, but it is just too heavy for my taste. When you get it right the smoke can hardly be seen. In reality you only get smoke flavor from the first two hours of a cook anyway, so no need to over do. Hope this helps

A:  Absolutely. Very easy to use and plenty of support when you read the reviews. With a few very basic modifications, you will smoke like a pro! Turn the legs to the outside. Put a few holes in the charcoal pan to help with air flow. Set the pan on bricks under the smoker, and replace the temp guage with a thermometrr that shows temp instead of the warm, ideal and hot on the guage provided. Now you are ready to go!

I would recommend this smoker strickly for grlling on the top grate. with the top on, you get a delicous smoked flavor. if you do use the bottom bowl for liquids, makes a mess and is difficult to deal with. Your grill will not have the luster it had when you bought it the next year... but it will work just fine.

A:  I recently purchased this smoker because I wanted to learn how to smoke meats. I love to cook so this is just another hobby to encourage this. I bought this as my first smoker and I intend to use it until it needs to be replaced. So I may have it for a few years. For a $50 investment, you can't beat it and I would spend the money on this. You can spend far more money on a smoker and you may not like the results. So I figure this is a throw away unit and it is worth the $50 investment.
