A:  Yes, fire glass can be used but it should not exceed a depth of 1/4''.

A:  Absolutely! You will only need about 10 - 15 lbs. of the half inch size and simply place it over the lava rocks. The glass alone is too dense and could snuff out the flame. A:  it does come w/ a 6 lb pkg of lava rocks but after I set it up I went back and bought a 10lb bag from the Grill area since I didn't think there were enough.
