Q:I have a leak on the stem, is it possible to repair it

Your first step will be to try and tighten down the packing nut. This nut is about the same size as a standard sparkplug and a spark plug wrench will work very well. If tightening this nut does not work, you will need to shut off the gas and remove this packing nut. There may be a nylon seal at the base of the stem, similar to that on your outdoor bib. If it is possible, replace this nylon washer.
Whether you will be able to repair the stem will depend on the age of the fireplace valve. I just replaced mine that was put in about 1953.
Replacing the valve may not be an easy task. My valve was in the concrete floor next to the fireplace in about 4 inches of 1950’s concrete. I had to use a small rotary drill hammer to break up the concrete before I could get to the valve.
