If you are applying our Penetrating Oil Stain, you don't need to wipe it off with a rag, but you want to apply a thin, even coat to ensure there isn't any puddling on the wood. However, you may see a mix of colors between the previous coating and the new coating, and it's always best to apply this stain to a bare, uncoated surface or coating of the same color. As it turns out, we do not recommend applying our water-based Semi-Transparent Waterproofing Stain & Sealer over an oil-based coating Alternatively, you can use our Semi-Transparent Penetrating Oil Waterproofing Stain & Sealer as it can be applied over an oil-based coating that's in good sound condition.
