Q:Would this pad work for polishing flat, petrified wood surface? Do I need to also use polishing powder?

Answer This Question

A:  Grinding and polishing a soft stone surface like petrified wood is a multistep process. These pads are typically used for polishing the edges of stone countertops after they have been cut and profiled. It takes practice to build up proficiency using a series of these pads to consistently achieve a high-polish shine. For a good-sized surface area of petrified wood, you'd probably have the best luck using the full range of pads (50,100, 200, 400,800,1500,3000 grit), plus a product called "densifier" that is typically used to polish industrial concrete floors, plus a lot of patience. You would need to mount each of these pads on a rubber backer mounted in turn on a rotary polisher equipped with a separate or integrated GFCI device and either a separate or integrated water feed. The most expensive version of this, a fully integrated solution with digital speed control, is a Makita stone polisher. There are other, less-expensive ways. What you would do is polish the piece with each of the pads in turn until you get to 400, apply denisifer, and polish all the way to 3000. You should get a nice shine going on your petrified wood that way. I would advise you to practice the full procedure on scrap rocks before you try this on your favorite piece of stone.

A:  I think the pad would work. Use it wet keep applying water as you polish. You shouldn't need additional grit it may clog the pad. 1500 grit will polish but it won't grind down irregular surfaces.I polished approximately 24 lineal feet of concrete counter top with this pad before it was worn out.

A:  you can probably use it with anything you can attach a 4 inch diameter hook & loop backing plate to. This pad is designed to be used with water, so make sure your machine is properly grounded to avoid electrocution.

    by|May 4, 2023

A:  This generally goes on a polisher with digital speed control mounted on a rubber hook-and-loop backer. Here's the Home Depot internet number for a rubber backer: 205182366. You're also going to need to hook the polisher to a GFCI device and have a source of water. The best electric polishers for stone polishing with integrated water feeds and GFCI are made by Makita and the most common 4 in. model is sold here: 203162032. It's very common for larger countertop operations to use purpose-made handheld pneumatic wet stone rotary polishers hooked up to large shop air compressors, because that eliminates the danger of electrocution completely.

A:  No, it will not. This is a stone polishing pad, to be used on bare stone that has been polished by abrasion to an already high shine.
