Q:will using this extend the life of my unibit?

Answer This Question

A:  I would use it with the unbit. It is a lube so it should keep it sharper longer.

A:  As a lubricant aids in cooling and removing cutter waste this product could help. It all would depend on how badly you punish your unibit when you use it.

A:  Yes

by|May 8, 2019

A:  It could, depends on factors like material being drilled and drilling (rotational) speed of the bit. Any lubricant helps. Please note that if you have one of those titanium nitride bits the titanium is just a pretty plating over a steel drill bit. It helps to cut friction at first but if you overheat the bit the coating is so thin it will do nothing to protect the steel bit under it from heat damage. Suggest you get hold of a machinists handbook for drilling and tapping. It will list the recommended speed AND lubricant for various metals and drill bit combinaions.

Q:I’m interested in using this for inside a kiln at 1500 degrees. Is it non flammable for this? There is no open flame.

        Answer This Question

A:  Yes it is flamable. Generally thread cutting fluids are lard based and have a high sulfur content. Sulfur being the active anti friction material. Both burn at much lower temps than you are contemplating.

        by|Mar 11, 2019

A:  We do not recommend our product in this application because that temperature is way past the flash point of 340 degrees.

            A:  yes, it will burn.

              A:  Refer to MSDS

              by|May 5, 2023

A:  Being familiar with both this cutting oil and with ceramic, glass, and metal kilns. I can only wonder what you would be doing with it inside there. From the information on the bottle there is a "special mixture of sulfonated and chlorinated oils [which] provides high film strength". From the SDS for the product it says "Hazardous combustion products may include: A complex mixture of airborne solid and liquid particulates and gases, oxides of sulfur and phosphorous (smoke). Carbon monoxide." and "Fire-fighters should wear appropriate protective equipment and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) with a full face-piece operated in positive pressure mode." Even though there is no open flame, the flash point (again from the SDS "Properly dispose of any contaminated rags or cleaning materials to prevent fires.") of this oil combined with the composition of sulfur and chlorine makes me say no. At least I would not use it in any of my kilns at temperatures over say 100 degrees.

A:  Yes as coolant to reduce bit wear

                    by|May 5, 2023

A:  WD-40 is ideal for drill lube on aluminum, especially the softer, gummier alloys and tempers. Alternately, kerosene is acceptable. Aluminum demands very sharp tooling to cut cleanly. Cast aluminum contains silicon and can dull low grade steel tooling. Be sure to use at least a M2 high speed steel bit.

A:  I don’t know why it couldn’t be used. Drill speed table look up would be more of a factor to prevent galling.

A:  I use this oil on my lathe but I don’t see why it wouldn’t work with any metal. I very seldom use oil to drill aluminum but to me any lubricant would work. Just my 2 cents

A:  It may make the bit too slippery on the aluminum. I prefer a little mineral spirits to lubricate the drill bit. It clears the chips better.

A:  You should use kerosene or mineral spirits for aluminum, not oil. Oil will cause the chips to stick to the tap or die causing them to get stuck.

A:  This oil is for cutting threads and not for sealing the joint. If using teflon tape and/or pipe joint compound on the threads have failed perhaps you need to install a newly threaded section of pipe. Then this product would be of help when those threads are being cut.
