      A:  I do not think you install with grooves down. They go up to give you a grip as you are walking. never seen them installed down.

      A:  The grooves go on the underside, to allow air movement to aid in drying.

      A:  I sincerely hope that none of you installed these treads with the groove side up. The V-grooves are NOT to help with traction (ridiculous) but to help prevent cupping (the wood bowing). The V- grooves need to be installed facing down. If you were to install them facing up they would be an excellent place for water to collect and eventually help to rot your wood.

        A:  The large "v" grooves ARE for the prevention of board warp. The other side has small grooves for traction.

          A:  Why not? It's strong enough for a 4' span, it is certainly strong enough for a shorter span. Use a Circular Saw with a high quality blade.

            A:  I know that a board can be cut. 3' + 2' = 5' which means an additional stinger must be installed. And yes 21/2' step treads also allow uniformity but increases your cost.
