A: I am not sure what copper azoles is but I had no problem handling the wood and I put up 12 of these. Hope this helps
by|Jan 17, 2023
A: Hello Ben, The use of copper azole in lumber has been deemed safe for use in raised garden beds, and for some people, that knowledge is enough for them to feel comfortable with its use in a handrail. If you are not too comfortable with the thought of running your hand over a wooden rail that has been treated with this product, though, you could look into a sealer for the wood - preferably something that is lower in the chemicals that are concerning. Another option would be to skip the pressure-treatment completely by purchasing an indoor handrail, then replacing it more often. While this might be a pain, it would give you peace of mind. A final option would be to purchase a handrail that is aluminum. Best of luck to you in your quest to be healthy.

Q:Need an exact measurement on the routed filet; currently there are 2 answers, both provide different measurements (1 5/8 and 1 1/2”). We are having custom balusters made, and need to know if these will work. Thanks

A: Hello Billy, The width of the routed opening of this handrail measures about 1-9/16 in.

A: It is 1 5/8 " so you can put a 2x4 or 2x6 on edge under it. Caution: mine wasn't kiln dried and some were actually wet, which warped within a few days. Fortunately I needed some short pieces and was able to use them anyway. All told, I love the look and would do it again.

Q:Anybody attaching these with small screws or narrow crown staples from the sides? Or is it just screws top-down only?

A: OK, so screws down is really the only option? FYI, this is not a "routed" rail with the holes for balusters. Also, I won't be using wooden balusters. I'll be using the same method as the main "completed project" picture on the HD page (this page: https://www.homedepot.com/p/6-ft-Pressure-Treated-Cedar-Tone-Wood-Moulded-Handrail-211698/205853683).

A: Hello Ryan, Here's how to connect the 2 x 4 handrail cap to a 2 x 4 "stem": Starting from either end, fasten the top 2x4 to the cap rail using seven (7) 3" screws through holes 1, 2, 5, 8, 11, 14, and 15. If rails are trimmed, predrill any additional holes with a 1/8" drill bit and insert the screw into the next nearest hole.

Q:Does it have a matching end piece / cap

Answer This Question
A: Dan, It does not appear that there is a matching end cap; this piece is meant to be a guardrail, not a handrail. If used as intended, there is never an exposed end because both ends of the guardrail are attached to a post.

There is not a longer handrail available at this time in the pressure-treated cedar-tone, but you might consider giving your local Home Depot store a call and inquiring about a special order. Mention Model #211698.

A: Kenneth,
Here are the general instructions: https://images.homedepot-static.com/catalog/pdfImages/4c/4cbd82e4-d4a3-4a87-8dd4-73adbf692911.pdf
Beyond that, you should attach this hand rail with a bracket that is approved to be used with pressure-treated lumber.

A: I installed the rails with a trim nail gun using 1.5 inch pins. Filled the pin holes with wood filler, sanded and coated the rail with urethane.

Q:How to join two lengths end to end ?

Answer This Question
A: Kenneth,
That's a good question, but according to our experts, the railing ends are meant to install to a deck post using a bracket. There really is not a way to join the railing from end to end. The railing is tested for code compliance using brackets and being installed between posts.
