Answer This Question

A:  Happy to help! Rust-Oleum Zinsser B-I-N Advanced Synthetic Shellac Primer will help block stains on interior surfaces. Please keep in mind, this product will need an opaque topcoat for full durability. When using on the horizontal surfaces on stairs or other walking surfaces, it must be used under some sort of flooring material, such as wood, carpet, or tile. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

Q:What is the best primer to be used to pain on laminate/vinyl cabinets and what paint would be good to put over it to ensure no chipping occurs?

    Answer This Question

A:  Happy to help! Rust-Oleum Zinsser B-I-N Advanced Synthetic Shellac Primer can be applied to laminate surfaces and has excellent adhesion to dense, glossy surfaces. Make sure the surface is clean and dry at the time of application. This primer can be topcoated after 45 minutes with most topcoats. You can use a cabinet paint of your choice, such as Rust-Oleum Transformations Cabinet Paint. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Rust-Oleum-Transformations-1-gal-Pure-White-Cabinet-Paint-369864/315070235 - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

      Answer This Question

A:  Great question, Mike! Sanding is not needed to ensure adhesion with Rust-Oleum Zinsser B-I-N Advanced Synthetic Shellac Primer. However, the surface does need to be clean and free of any grease. Sanding may be needed if any areas need to be smoothed. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

Q:Can I use this over old glued wall where backsplash was removed to re tile backsplash in my kitchen?

          Answer This Question

A:  We're here to help, Drea! Prior to applying Rust-Oleum Zinsser B-I-N Advanced Synthetic Shellac Primer, all adhesive must be removed from the surface. If the old adhesive is not completely removed or sealed, this primer can reactivate it. If needing to seal any adhesive, we recommend using Rust-Oleum Zinsser Gardz Problem Surface Sealer. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Zinsser-GARDZ-1-gal-Clear-Water-Based-Interior-Problem-Surface-Sealer-Case-of-4-2301/202596339 - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

            Terrible
The directions state no sanding! FALSE! We cleaned very well with a degreaser (in fact, what is recommended) followed all instructions to a T. Stuff peels right off. So much money down the drain

Let's talk about this! In ideal conditions, Rust-Oleum Zinsser B-I-N Advanced Synthetic Shellac Primer fully cures after 7 days and will have reached full adhesion by that point. Please keep in mind, this will need to be topcoated with an opaque topcoat for durability as well.

I am very disappointed that this product did not prevent tannin bleed through on my pine boards. I have painted probably 100 signs this summer and 50% or more had tannin bleed through despite using this primer. I am just as shocked as you probably are because the reviews all say otherwise. What am I doing wrong??? I would buy new wood, sand, prime, sand again, prime, and then top coat with either oil or latex based paint. Both types of paint have had bleed through. So very disappointed because I will now have to strip down my signs entirely and start over as I can't sell them like this. Some signs have knot bleed through, some have streaks of tannin bleed through, and some signs are just a dinghy, slightly jaundiced white color after a week of curing... All my hard work and money down the drain. :(

Something is amiss here! Our Zinsser B-I-N Advanced Synthetic Shellac Primer is designed to seal and block tannin in wood prior to painting. Yellowing is not always caused by tannin bleed, and may also be caused by application of certain clear coatings, especially over white or light colors. We need to know more about the application and products used to get to the bottom of this. Please give us a call at 888-855-1774, we want to try to make things right! - Rust-Oleum Product Support 2 Rustoleum

I used this primer for a bunk bed that I constructed and I could not be happier about how well it covered the wood and created an amazing surface for the furniture paint.

The ONLY bare wood 1st coat primer!
After 55 years of painting this product is a MUST! ALWAYS use it on bare wood as a 1st coat! Kills knots from bleeding through. When applied as a fist coat on bare wood this product allows the fibers of the wood to be sanded off to a glass finish! Then the finish coat will pop! You have to learn how to use it so watch videos on proper application. Once mastered you will never use another primer on bare wood. That is...if a QUALITY finish matters to you. As a Master painter I CAN'T work with out it!

Bought it because it was recommended for covering difficult surfaces. Applied it to lightly sanded urethaned wood, and it worked extremely well. Then top-coated with water-based paint and also worked very well. A contractotr friend used it outside to seal pressure treated wood and he really liked it also.
