About This Product

Bring new life to your lawn with the Vigoro Contractor's Southern Grass Seed Mix. Specially formulated for southern regions, it provides lush grass even on tough-to-grow lawns. The coated seeds retain 6X more water than uncoated seeds, gradually releasing water back to the plant during the establishment phase. This coating also adds nutrients and fungicide to promote quick root growth and protect the seedlings from disease. Perfect for sunny and shady areas, this southern grass seed mix provides excellent temporary ground cover and erosion control.

Grass died in less than a month.
The grass started off great and died after a few rain showers in less than a month. I watered it on dryer days in the evening and was even able to mow it once.

Grass stays green all year long
This is a great product. I highly recommend it. I could never grow grass with other seeds but this one did the trick.. I over seed the whole lawn. But when it grows it grows. You will have to cut grass every week though. These picture will my dog is winter time.

The seed varieties in this Vigoro Southern Mix are a good blend for a problem area that I have in my backyard. The quick sprouting Italian Ryegrass and Barduke Kentucky Bluegrass both provide some instant coverage while the Bariane Tall Fescue is reliable for its hardiness in a variety of conditions. In order to assure an evenly spread application, I used a Vigoro handheld spreader with a low setting and did several runs over the subject site. Most of the seed sprouted within a week and continues to develop and fill in rather nicely.

Coated Grass Seed This “southern mix” grass seed has a coating that helps retain water to make seeds sprout faster. I’m waiting till a little later this spring till it warms up a little more before overseeing some areas of my yard where I need it, but I had a bare spot where I only had clover and some weeds. I spread some of this seed on that spot in mid March. We had several days where it was down in the 40’s and 50’s at night but got up into the 60’s during the day, and we had significant rain. I checked on the spot in the yard exactly two weeks later, and even in these cooler temps, I had great growth of this seed. I’m pleased with how easy it was to germinate, and it looks like it is coming in beautifully. This is a mix grass seed that is good for quick growth and ground cover, maybe not your ideal manicured landscape type grass, but it perfect for my purposes.

Waiting on the temperature to elevate and stabilize for overnight lows of around 55° is testing my patience LOL. I really want to plant this grass seed in the landscaped currently near bare areas of the yard. We have used this exact seed several times as an over seed and in bare spots in the yard. It says its best for new construction but has been a proven grower in other applications as well. The coated seed does hold water much better than uncoated seed however I still water grass when I plant it twice a day on most days. When we get rain I skip it for one or both watering sessions. Birds dont seem to bother it as much as they do with raw seed but I still do a light straw cover on the plated areas. We have never had an issue with weeds in this mix. It has a very very low weed seed content.

VIGORO 20 lbs. Contractor's Grass Seed Southern Mix with Water Saver Seed Coating. I planted the seed in Miracle Grow potting soil and on the bare ground after light raking. I watered both the same for three days and after that time they both started to sprot. The mix contains 64% Panterra V Italian Rygrass, 12.29% Bariane Tall Fescue, 4.99% Barduke Kentucky Bluegrass, .5% other seed. 17% is a water saver seed coating to help hold moisture. The rye seed will come up first to give cover to the permanent seed growth. From my experiment it shows that the seed will geminate in most soils, but it is important to water daily if there is little or no rain. A longer experiment would be required to see how the permanent seed comes in.

We have several bare areas in our back yard and this seems to be the perfect grass blend for these areas. The seeds are coated with a water saver coating that will help with germination and reduces the amount of watering required. This is a southern mix that should do well in our hot Georgia climate. It consists of ryegrass - which germinates quickly for erosion control and tall fescue and Kentucky bluegrass for a more permanent, long term coverage.

Best grass seed you can get! Have used this seed for several years, and I have tried different brands, but I always go back to the Vigoro. This year we went ahead and got it a little early, as we don’t want to miss out. The weather has been cold and damp, and when the warmer weather gets here, we’re ready! This gives us time to prep the lawn, do some leveling in places, get the top layer stirred up, and ready for planting. For larger areas I use a standard fertilizer spreader, and for tighter areas, I use a hand held spreader. Vigoro has always produced excellent results with a high rate of germination and a nice, thick lawn. After seeding and raking in, I like to cover with a light coat of wheat straw, which protects the seeds and does an excellent job of holding the moisture in, saving a lot of water. With a little work, it’s a great way to ensure a beautiful, healthy lawn.

This is a 5000 sq ft coverage bag of coated grass seed for use in many grassing projects. The mix of seed is an average type mix, with mostly panterra italian ryegrass and small amounts of kentucky bluegrass and other odds and ends. It is coated seed which means it hangs onto the moisture better than naked seed so watering can be reduced during germination. The bag is a moderately heavy duty plastic bag, but does not have the "zipper" top, so if you do not use all the seed you need to somehow seal the remaining seed up maybe with tape for longer storage. Generally you need to use it within a year to get the best growth out of the bag, or some of the seed will deteriorate and not germinate. This works well to establish a new lawn or to reseed your sections of lawn which you have perhaps added new or better soil to after a failed area. I do recommend this and have used it in the past successfully in New England.
