Brush or spray your only application option. I was doing ceiling wood on a 1000 sq ft carport and it was a chore using a brush but the time and hassle of the masking and clean-up from overspray made brushing the better option. Goes on very thin on bare wood (cypress in my application), even using a 6 inch high quality brush. Can instructions recommend three coats! Recoat time spec’d at 2 hours but I found it was dry in 30 minutes at 70 F and 40% humidity. I had to do 1000 sq feet and figured it would take more than two cans but it only took 1.5 cans. Initially, I was worried High Gloss might look to bright but now that it is done, I love the look.

AWESOME PRODUCT

For getting the WET look ,this is the product to use. We only have 1 coat on this, we are planning 2 coats. This is a BBQ wall and counter we made. The stone tile was also purchased thru Home Depot.

Great topcoat over color coats

I have been using interior Varathane water based poly for years as a topcoat for all my indoor trim work. It gives good gloss and does not yellow. So far I have used this exterior spar varnish formulation on a storm door and a lantern. The color coats for the storm door were latex, the lantern had a combination of enamel and latex. For the door, the varnish was applied with brush and pad. For the lantern, the varnish was applied with a cheapo HVLP spray gun (unthinned). Once dry, Varathane can be sanded and polished to a mirror finish, but I don't bother for these outdoor projects. No deterioration so far after several brutal winters and the harsh Summer sun. I am really impressed with modern waterborne technology.

Wood Sealer

I have finished the remodel of the house. The staining and sealing of the front door and exterior columns were the last project on the remodel. I used Varethane to seal the columns after restain and on the new front door after it was stained. I'm confident that our updated look adds curb appeal to the house. Many of my neighbors have commented that the house has a fresh and updated appearance.

Smooth and Clear

This urethane went on easily, dried quickly and had a good finish. It was easy to use and still looks great. We used the urethane for an outdoor barbecue table and had many compliments during our 4th of July party!
